I Ride: Two Brothers! & Two Brodas!
Oh yessss I did.....the quest to slay the Dragon solo :D

Hey Y'all!

So...as the title says I decided randomly to take a trip down to the Tail of the Dragon on my 2012 ZX6r which had 620 miles when I started. Wait...let me back track...okay maybe this wasn't so "random" but slightly planned out (who am I kidding...I did not plan anything )

Recently I switched jobs...so I had a one week break in between jobs and my brother casually mentioned I should ride down to the dragon, and after that perhaps continue onto Texas to visit family (That last part fell through due to major flood warnings in Texas)

In any event....in anticipation for this trip I did my first oil change on the bike at 624 miles....(I know Riverzzr would kill me....thankfully its my bike )

I'm a bit of a purist and decided to go with Kawi 10W40 oil and a OEM oil filter (yes...the China version ending in 0008 -_- )

Some pics of...nothing new, but here ya go

Well....that was Friday, Sunday I geared up the bike in anticipation for a long ride....(NY -> Tennessee)

Gearing up.....

List of my gear fr the trip
- Speed & Strength 2 pc Drag Suit
- Alpinestar Smx5 Race boots
- HJC helmet (with ear plugs for wind noise lol)
- Gloves (Had a few pairs on me in case...always bring extra)
- Kawasaki OEM Tank Bag (meant for Ninja 300 but I made it work )
- Kawasaki OEM Tail bag (Meant for 09-15 Zx6r)

All gassed up and ready to roll....as Kawi says "let the good times roll"

So...I don't have "too" many pics of the actual ride down there but I intended to stop in each state to grab a pic...but that did not happen. The list of states I passed through are as follows:
- New York (Starting Point)
- New Jersey
- Pennsylvania
- Maryland
- West Virginia
- Virginia
- Tennessee/North Carolina (Finish)

I probably missed something...but I did snap a "few" state line crossing pics below:

West Virginia

Virginia:

Tennessee ^_^

To give some notes on the riding...because I did ride 720 miles (Just under 12 hours...) STRAIGHT on a crotch rocket
- Stopped for gas approximately every 150 miles (2 hours) which gave me time to stretch....
- The added luggage did not make the bike feel "Sluggish" BUT I did feel the cross winds A LOT more, I was okay though
- I will say...the tank bag is real nice to lean on when doing long distance trips (not sure if its stupid or not but I used it a lot )
- My gas mileage was just over 40MPG on my ride down there (I got better later...but that will come further in my story )

So...I get to the hotel after 12 hours riding...get a good nights sleep then tackle the dragon the next day (Monday)

Stayed at a Holiday Inn right off of 40

It was about 1.5 hours from the dragon, but it was close to Gattlinburg and Pigeon Forge....definitely a nice area at night to see.

Next: The Dragon........
I just purchased 3 of them from their site....the rest I don't care much for, but love the first pic)

Note: Before anyone wants to "knock" my lack of lean angle please remember I RODE my bike ALONE from home (720 miles away) and this was NOT the place or time to go down (Not that there is a place or time....but you get the idea)

Action pics:

Well folks....the above pics display my "tactics" to slaying the dragon...I finally reached the dragons den and met other fellow riders on the same quest

Oh...before I forget some random "lookout" pics because the weather and scenery were beautiful

Continued......

Arrived at the dragon....who looks away in shame

Decent crowd for a weekday.....

Yes...the "Tree of Shame" (Which of you fellas are on there....)

Saw some interesting stuff at the dragon stop.....

I thought I rode far coming from NY (720 miles) until I met these folks (Fellow Englishman...check out the license plates)

Well folks...the dragon run was definitely a blast but I also wanted to explore some of the gorgeous roads around there (a.k.a. cherohala skyway), my luck though....they were mowing the darn grass all over in the NC boarder part so the road was COVERED in wet freshly cut grass...that sort of killed my ride through there but the scenery was still gorgeous

So....gassed up and enjoyed the roads

Well....I had a WONDERFUL day riding the area so I treated myself to a bit of ice cream (Strawberry cheesecake....yummmm )

Well folks.....I had a great great time but decided it was time to head back home to NY....

Unpacked

Packed and ready to roll....

I don't have many pics of my ride home....twas sad and I tried to make it quick....of course no long distance trip is complete without some rain....I even laughed when I got caught in a thunderstorm since it really completed my "trip"

I did not have "real" rain gear but I bought some $0.99 plastic ponchos in small packs from wallmart (Camping section) which did the trick for me...I only rode in the rain for about one hour so was not "too" bad.

Well....just under 12 hours later and a total of just under 2,000 miles on the trip I arrive home.

Trip complete.....actually not just yet....I had one more task set ahead of me...she needed a bath

Continued....

Cleaned the chain & Sprocket

Also did a small detail
- Dawn soap to strip dirt/wax
- Clay bar
- Washed again
- Zeno wax....3 layers (2 for swirl protection and 1 for shine )
- Take pictures

I think I "EARNED" this plate frame for doing this trip solo

Sooooooo....fellas that concludes my 4 day trip down to the Tail of the Dragon
Day 1 - Rode 12 hours from NY -> Tennessee straight (720 miles)
Day 2 - Rode through the Tail of The Dragon once, then explored the area around there....also went out to Pigeon Forge and Gattlinburg
Day 3 - Rode through the Tail of The Dragon twice, and explored more around there....
Day 4 - Rode 12 hours from Tennessee -> NY straight (720 miles)

Overall I had an AMAZING trip....yes I would have had a "better" time with more people, or taking my time riding down there instead of 12 hours straight. But I do NOT regret this trip...on the contrary it will be one to remember

For gas mileage...I actually wrote down all my miles per tank on each receipt when I filled up and calculated the mileage per fill up. I have not calculated my average for the trip overall yet but I can tell you my "best" and "Worst" tank for mileage

Best MPG = 48.79 mpg (Was the Tail of the dragon run )
Worst MPG = 38.37 mpg (trip there on day 1....odd)

Funny enough I found my "best" mpg was when I rode the bike "hard" or spirited through the mountains....most of those tanks were in the mid-40 mpg range. My trip in I got just about 40mpg on each tank...then again the bike had only 620 miles and was probably breaking itself in

Overall....(and I still need to calculate on paper) I was guess my average to be around 43-44 MPG over my 15 fill ups....not too shabby i'd say for a crotch rocket

Aughhhh how I wish.....but chances are with my new job I won't be able to take off then. I was "in-between" jobs last week so I jumped on the opportunity to ride down there.....I hope I can do this again..if not this summer then next one

Awesome post, looks like a great trip! Me and my best riding buddy are planning a similar trip, as soon as I can manage to get more time off work...been hard with part-time Masters since I take some vacation days to study for finals

we do weekend trips often and they are great fun. We just need some more time off to get a bit further down to that area (coming from Canada it's a bit of a trek)

Thanks buddy! I could have just posted some "Cool" pics and that's it....but figured there may not be "that" many people who ride a crotch rocket that long solo....so I posted the small bits and details.

If anyone has ANY questions or wants suggestions please feel free to ask here or PM me, I will help as best as I can

Haha....thats always the hard part mate.....time......so hard to find enough time these days for a trip like that. And yeah...Canada would be quiet a trip

Thank you! that means a lot to me.....always working to improve my riding techniques! and the white suit comment...... My brother said it looks like a painters suit, but hell I love it and got SOOOO many nice comments on it during this trip. Best $220 I ever spent

Like I said folks.....not everyone has the money, time, or bike to do this. BUT...if you do I HIGHLY encourage you hop on the bike and make a random trip cross country (Does not have to be the Tail of the Dragon), something about riding into the unknown sunset.....
