Just hit me!!

Ok. That title is a bit misleading. However, while almost committing to purchasing airplane tickets on some website, it hit me to ride my bike from the bay area of California to visit my brother in Las Vegas! It would be about a 9 hour ride. It could be anywhere from 550-750 miles. I haven't ridden that far before though, but I don't really see a reason not to. I believe the longest I've ridden is maybe around 3 hours.

A financial way to look at it is it would be cheaper in theory to ride my bike. But, I do need to put some new tires, front and rear. Probably not a Q3 this time because it would wear the fuck out on a long distance ride. I would also need a backpack or some type of luggage. All of that cost bling.

However, I would need to buy that shit anyways down the line. Tires I mean. Luggage would just be nice to have. As well as changing the oil and adjusting the valves when I get back. I work on my bike, so it wouldn't be that cost ineffective.

So what do you guys think? This ride would be in late March btw. The reason I'm going out there, btw, is to attend MLB spring training in Arizona with my brother who lives in Las Vegas now.

Do it. You might be sore for a little bit but the ride will be worth it. Also, I'd recommend doing some fun roads as opposed to all highway. Just take a lot of breaks, wear gear, take your time and you'll be fine.

Longest I did was 10 hours just touring around. It was fun, but all I can say is thank god for the ass padding in my a-stars pants...

Definitely do a very good check on everything before you head out there are plenty of check lists online or eventually someone will probably write one in here. Get a bungee net with hooks you can fix to some places on the tail that way you can take a backpack with water/snacks, clothes, tools, and cold/rain gear(used latex gloves and trash bags) without having to wear that bitch the whole way. That would start to suck about hour #2.

Definitely will wear full gear. I don't think my dainese have any ass padding in them though. Can you recommend any kind of attachment that I could mount my iPhone to? I was also contemplating between a backpack or some kind of luggage that attaches to the tail.

Depends on your budget, if you got the cash you can buy the baggage carrier if you want. As for the mount, my friend had some of those cheap gas station holders what had a long bendable stick that could be wrapped around things. He just stuck in that hole in the steering stem and bent the bottom up so it wouldnt blow out. Was something like 5$ and its right in front of you.

I did Phoenix to NorCal (800 miles) in two, 400ish mile stretches. You WILL be sore, especially if you haven't done much distance. I don't have soft or hard luggage, so I used the compression bag that my motorcycle cover came in to fit about a day and a half of clothes in it plus the bike cover. It's gonna hurt a lot if you do it in one stretch lol. I second all the rain gear and whatnot. I wore waterproof stuff on the way out of LA and it paid off as I went up the grape vine and it pissed down. If you have a lot of stuff to take though, you have to get luggage. And just sayn, it wasn't comfortable at all and at 250-300 miles, I was feeling it.

Edit:

I have a Kriega R25 that I loaded up with tons of stuff for my trip. Paid off like no other. If you've ever carried a 30lb backpack that wasn't well designed, you probably know that it cuts into your shoulders like no other. Loved the Kriega, it worked beautifully. If you're reasonably fit/you work out and your posture is good, your back won't be tired at all, but your butt will be tenderized.

Check out a tank bag... They are nice to lean on during those longer highway stints. Plus a lot of them have "map pouch" on top you could put your phone into.

Keep it on 2 wheels!
