Track Bike vs. Rental

Just wanted to get some feedback from other track day riders in Canada.

I just finished a 3x day track introduction course here in Toronto. I'm now eligible for a SOAR license as novice. I would like to keep doing track days, but I'm not sure if I should use my 250, or sell it and rent bikes from track days organizers.

I put together a quick list of the cost... seems like using my own bike would be more expensive at first, but after the initial purchase it would become cheaper. But I'm sure there are a lot of other stuff that I did not include (like tire warmers, oil, brakes, maintenance, more tools to buy).

Anyways, just looking for a feedback from other people who have been doing this for a while.

Quote:
=> Own bike
-- Per track visit
Track day fees - +/-$200
Trailer rental - $22.95/day
Gas - +/- $50

-- Multiple visit
Fairing - $300-$400
Straps/Tie downs - $30
SOAR License - $120/year
Tires - +/-$300
Spare parts - ?
----------
First visit - $1122.95
Following visits - $272.95 (not including tires)

=> Rental
SOAR License - $120 / year
Trackday with CBR $125 - $428.27
. $500 DAMAGE INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE
Trackday with Ninja 250 - $474.58
. $750 DAMAGE INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE

Thanks,
Vic.

Keep the ninjette!

When you get to the point where your maxing the 250 100% of the time on track Im sure you wont need help figuring out your next move!

Is the track a 250 track only or something?

I'd never rent. Having your own and being able to customize it how you please is the way I would go

Track is not 250 only, but having just started with tracks, I don't see a reason to jump on a 600 right away.

I was looking also at the frequency I'd be going. Not sure if keeping the 250 for a 3x times a year visit would be worthy.

I've done both schools here in Toronto, if you just did a 3 day course I'm guessing you did Racer 5 which is a decent course and run by very good people and actually the people I bought my track bike from. I would definitely say do not rent and keep your 250 or sell it and buy a track bike if that is what you want.

Outside of Racer 5 and Rider's Choice I don't know anyone that rents bikes plus renting would mean you can only do their track days which greatly limits your choices for days over a short season. Also you will never be as comfortable on a rental as you would be on your own bike. Also with the rental rates at about 500 a day plus the track day, not including if you drop it, after 6 days you could've easily bought a well sorted track bike.

To me this is a no brainer, either keep your 250 or buy a track bike, renting makes absolutely no sense.

In addition to Rider's Choice, there is also Pro6 which rents bikes at Calabogie for approx. $300 for 600cc. There's also moto-nation (Moto-Nation :Rental Services track bikes) which rents at Calabogie and Mosport when Pro6 is the trackday provider. Their rates are $300 as well, but if you buy a package of 6 days, it works out to $230 per day. Extra charges are fuel and tire wear, but in the green group I believe tire wear is waived.

If you race the 250 one set of tires will last you the entire year!!! yes i said it ENTIRE YEAR!!
I spoke with the kids who are top riders in the 250 series and they have been on the same dunlop unbeaten tires since the begining of last yr. Their dad has also ridden on it and riders weight makes no diff either on wear. I could not fathom it at first.

Stick with the 250 for now. upgrade later. DON'T RENT. On the track you will crash. 1 crash and you have almost equaled your costs.
If you don't crash you aren't trying hard enough.
See you on the track!

Yep. Crash a rental and you're paying someone else to fix it. Crash your own, you only pay for the parts.
