San Marcos Area?

Hey, so my girlfriend's been looking at grad schools for the last few months and it looks like she's going to Texas State in the fall. Right now the plan is we're going to head out there in June to sign a lease, then head back in late July/early August depending on when our lease starts.

Anyways, I know nearly nothing about the area but I know I've seen a bunch of Texas people in this forum, so anyone have any insight? What to expect, riding spots, trackdays, general life shit, etc. My parents now live in Fort Worth so I'll probably be up there a fair amount as well, so if there's anything worthwhile up there let me know too!

I'm actually pretty excited about the move, but it's going to be a big change so obviously a bit anxious about it as well. We still have a lot of questions to be answered so not sure exactly where we'll wind up in the area, but everything is pointing to a mid-late summer arrival.

It's not California but you shouldn't be left wanting for riding opportunities. You'll be right on the edge of the hill country in San Marcos with plenty of good roads that are easily accessible. I've moved to primarily track riding but I know Strider rides the hill country a lot and would be a great resource for routes.

Tracks and track days are plentiful and affordable (except for COTA) with the two main outfits being Ridesmart and Lonestar Track Days. Closest tracks to you will be Harris Hill Raceway (private member track in San Marcos but can go as guest of a member) and COTA in Austin. MSRC and Eagles Canyon are up around DFW and would only be a few hours drive. Likewise MSRH is just south of Houston and is an easy drive. Unfortunately you'll miss out on riding Texas World Speedway as it's getting torn down this summer for a housing development .

The tracks here with the exception of COTA are likely a bit rougher than you're used to. But if you can ride fast on these tracks you can ride fast anywhere. If you're interested in racing the CMRA is the org for Texas and has a strong following and a season that stretches from Feb to Nov.

Thanks! I don't think I'll be able to attempt racing until after I get a bit more settled, and maybe explore the tracks a bit more, but that's great info. I've been primarily riding track as of late, but I have no doubt I'll be trying to explore the area once I get there so I'll be doing some street riding without a doubt. I actually sent Strider a PM earlier so we've spoken a bit.

EDIT: That Harris Hill deal looks awesome!

Hell yeah, you're only about 3 hours from me. It definitely isn't California but it's the next best thing! You'll LOVE Austin/Round Rock as there is always something to do. Get ready for some heat bro!

My little brother goes to Texas State. I was born and raised in Corpus, went to school in San Antonio, now I've been back in Corpus for work for awhile. I'm sure texas is nothing compared to Cali. It's HOT! Austin is cool. I really liked SA when I was there too! San Marcos is a college town. Should be interesting lol

Yeah I'm aware of the heat, not that I've experienced it, but I've been told by nearly everyone I've talked to. Her parents are in Corpus, we were down there recently and it was pretty cool so I'd assume we'll be down there occasionally as well. I'm not positive we'll actually be IN San Marcos, but we obviously won't be going too far since she'll need to commute there for school.

Congrats Preston.

Happy and excited for you. You will be missed for sure in CA. If I can handle
temps of 118f to 120f in the summers in AZ. I am sure you can handle Texas heat. Texas though, is prob more humid. But, it's only heat. Only ensures tires stick to the ground.

Look forward to track days with you before you go.

Oh, the stuff I say.

Hey thanks man, good to see you back around here a bit. I'm hoping to get a trackday or 2 in, but I need to replace my boots (cut them off post crash) and I'm not sure quite how to swing that while saving for the moving expenses. We'll see.

Yeah, the humidity will definitely make you reevaluate your life each spring. As long as you can get used to sweating like a whore in church just by walking to your car from your front door at 7am, you'll be just fine. It is completely different than the heat out west, which will literally take your breath away.

2011 - (90) days over 100 and (60) were in a row. Worst.

Anyone can go fast in a straight line...
Better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.

Yea, that's the Houston area. It's not that bad at all in the Austin/San Antonio area.

Austin is my second home and you're full of it! San Antonio really isn't that bad though. I wish I was closer to the hill country though. All we have here is the Sam Houston NF and that gets pretty old.
