Sena 20S & Shoei RF-1200 Install?

I may be an idiot, but I can't install my Sena 20S onto my Shoei RF-1200. I just got the helmet yesterday. I didn't have a problem on my Scorpion, but the first issue here getting the Sena holder to be flush with the edge of the helmet shell (there's a vertical gap between the shell and the unit). The second issue is trying to get the left cheek pad back in after all the wires are installed. Can anybody help me out?

I just bought the 20S (2WheelPros) for $209 (No tax, Free Shipping) and I ran into the same exact problem on my RF-1200.

First, the speakers do not fit into the recessed ear slots. Just remove the thing gray foam ear pull and set it aside. You won't be using it. Use the thinner of the two velcro foam sets and place them inside the ear slots. You will have to use the double-sided thinnest velcro sticky first. The molding for the ear slot is different so you find that when you seat the speakers into the recessed ear slots, the section that has the wire will be slightly higher. Only fix is if you dremel/open up that spot more.

Second, unless I am missing something, there is NO WAY to clamp down the standard headset thing-a-ma-jig. The problem is that the two screws that tighten the clamp are in a bad spot and almost no matter where you seat the unit, the screws are hidden or unaccessible and you can't tighten them down.

The alternative I used was the additional bracket that you affix to the helmet via the stickey tape. This is a failure waiting to happen. I used this method and the Sena unit does NOT stay secure. In fact, the double sides tape is already peeling off the helmet within just 2 hours at the stickey tape side that sticks to the helmet. It is also pulling off the bracket. I would NOT suggest this method.

Althernative? Use the clamps and don't worry about sliding it up flush to the rim of the helmet. Just push it in/up just enough so the two small hex bolts that you will screw down are still visible. A shitty way of mounting it, but the only alternative I can fathom at this point.

Lastly, don't forget to go to SENA website and update your product. A few bug fixes. And when you pair up through Bluetooth, don't be disappointed how crappy your music "may" sound. But open up Pandora, iHeartRadio, or TuneIn Radio or the FM option and it gets damn loud!!!

If anyone has any other ideas how to mount it or links to videos or photos, please share. The double-sided tape bracket sucks and poses risk to lose your Sena unit at high speeds.

I'll have to double check when I get home... but I am pretty sure mine is all the way up flush with the clamp mount. I do remember it being a bit frustrating to install but it has been on there for almost 2 years now with no issues. I'll post up some pics this afternoon if no one else beats me to it. :bigthumb:

Pretty flush here.

If you come North anytime soon and haven't figured it out, I'm in Bakersfield and I'll be more than happy to install it for you. Just pass by Fred Cummings Motorsports.

All, I responded too soon. I found a way to mount the Sena 20S unit flush up against the helmet brim.

I used a inter-changeable screwdriver shaft, slightly thicker than a pencil, and carefully inserted it behind the helmet hard liner and shifted it away from the Sena 20S unit just enough to use the supplied allen key to screw down the bolts. Remember to do each bolt a few turns for proper seating.

As for the speakers, I gave up on that crappy "tin" sound and plugged in my ear buds to the Sena 20S unit. What a night and day difference!! Still works exactly the same as the supplied speakers, but the sound quality is so much better. Only takes an additional 30 seconds to put the earbuds in and put the helmet on.

Since the cheek pads are a bit of self-inflicted torture removing the helmet, I ordered up the 31mm cheek pads. Hopefully this will make life easier. On putting the helmet on and taking it off as well as not torturing my ears any more.

I've mounted the Sena SMH10 on two different RF1200 helmets. I did not flush the mount all the way against the base of the helmet because I didn't want it all the way up to nearly touch the bottom edge of the face shield. I've got about a quarter inch gap left, but the mount is on solidly and is not going anywhere. Regarding the internal wires, I found it easier to install the speakers and route the wires before finally affixing the mount to the left side of the helmet -- I just let it dangle until I got the speakers, mic, and wires routed the way I wanted, then I affixed the mount bracket after replacing the left side cheek pad. I've read someone say they cut away the plastic rings on the outer perimeter of each speaker, which clearly would reduce the circumference of the speakers and make them fit better in the speaker cut-outs, but I haven't done that. There is also a little channel in each ear cut-out that you can align with the wires where they attach to the speakers, which makes the install a little cleaner. Not perfect, but I haven't had a failure yet.
