Thoughts on my new Arai helmet

So i've been rocking a Shoei X-11 for a few years. I replaced padding, but it's time for a new helmet. I am a classic medium in every helmet i try on. I took some above pics and i realized that i am more oval than i thought.

I decided on an Arai Defiant. I got it BNIB for $325. It's a beautiful helmet. It fits more snug than the X-11 for obvious reasons. Here's the deal, there's a gap to the sides of my eye sockets, just forward of my temples. This gap is much, much less on the Shoei, but still there. Is this normal?

Here it is. Little cheese factor is always my style. Went with the Arai Defiant Josh Hayes Jolly Roger replica. Skulls and a sprocket. Why the fuck not? I was gonna go with an X-14 Kagayama replica, but I needed something for my Magna and eventual Z1000. 2nd consideration is a Bell Race Star. That X-14 will be my track day reward once I get fairly proficient. I'm retiring my Shoei X-11 because it's 12 years old. Never been down, but it's way past it's supposed safe, useful life. I've replaced all pads, and those are worn anyway. Although it buffets and moves around on my head, I truly love that helmet. I'm used to the obscene wind sound, summer air flow and particular view.

On to the Arai. I have not tested, but I'll throw my thoughts up in this thread when I do. Box opening...Lots of gadgetry. Light helmet. Beautiful finish. Arai doesn't finish/paint the drilled holes for venting, if you look real close. Padding is SUPER cushy. Almost to cushy. Shoei lets you know you've got a tight helmet on. Arai tricks you a bit. I feel like I could probably go Signet for long-oval shape, but I'm happy with intermediate oval. That's Shoei's MO. I always thought the RF-1200 was a tight fit. Again, a lot has got to do with Shoei's padding. I can't go small in any helmet, I'm stuck in this cunt hair under medium category. Defiant has publicly shield standard. I'm gonna forgo for now because I just don't face that much inclement and cold weather here in Phoenix. Plus, the Defiant has this little slide lock that allows one little sliver of an opening to de-fog, slide it back to lock in. Also, Arai shield doesn't ratchet. Pretty cool but it will take getting used to. I love throwing a shield down and hearing ratcheting. Anyway, lock down is solid. Comes with silicone live for shield gasket. Has a pull down chin shield to extend wind protection. Nice neck roll. I'll be getting either a dark smoke or a blue mirror shield.

I figured if I didn't want it for some reason, I could resell. I'll be keeping it. $325 is dirt cheap to pay to get into a helmet of this quality. Hopefully it pays off. Oh. And you get a bunch of cool Arai stickers. Fuck yes!!

Bye bye, sweet sweet Shoei

Defiant is Intermediate Oval and the Shoei X-11 is also Intermediate Oval, so it should be fine as long as it doesn't put a lot of pressure or leave marks on your forehead. If I had to guess off of what little info I could find on the Shoei, I'd say it is a little bit on the longer oval side than rounder.

I retired my Shoei RF1000 a while ago. Thought pushing it to 7 years was much since they say 5.
Don't know how true the 5 year life span is but 12 seems to be pushing it.

Nice to know you found another brand that works, may have to give them a look as my Bell Star is at 5 years now.
Does Arai have any of the newer helmet tech incorporated into this model?

Look up the STG review video that they posted on their site recently of their "top 5 helmet shootout". It's a lengthy 30-minute video where he compares the Arai Corsair, Shoei X-14, Bell Race/Pro Star, AGV Corsa/Pista GP, and an HJC that I could care less about. It's basically the top of the line helmet for each of those brands and he talks in details about each one. Very informative if you're looking for a new helmet and don't mind spending $400-$1500 on one.

My head is worth something, when I look at the 5 year life expectancy really hate putting $1500 on one.
With the 6 track days, and 4 days worth of touring on my street last year bike makes the per use cost a little nuts.

Well do more track days and it becomes more worth it!

You don't have to pick the most expensive out of that range, that's just what they were going for. The most I've paid for a helmet was mid-$400 range, and I felt that was pretty good and well worth it.

Yep that's the one.

Yeah like I said, they're comparing the top of the line from each of those brands. That would be the Corsair for Arai.

I really wanted an AGV Corsa but they're so damn expensive. They fit me pretty well though and they're light! In the end I went with the 35% off, buy 1 get 1 free Kabuto deal. Haven't used them on the bike yet since it's winter, but they seem to fit very well, really similar to my old Arai.

I paid $325 for this Defiant. You can get solid color, high end helmets under $500 all day.

eBay. The seller had a few helmets. $400 obo. I offered $300 she countered with $325.

I wear mediums which are the most common size, then probably large. If you're an extreme size, then deals can be from internet storefronts, else its an ebay search. Decide on a couple helmets and start looking. Sometimes you have to talk yourself into a helmet. I wanted a Shoei x-14 or an Arai corsair x. The Defiant is good for naked bike/more upright riding. My Honda Magna only has a flyscreen, so i figured it's the perfect helmet for now.

Know your models and years. Ebay search for new helmets. Know that a Rapide = Defiant in the US.Know that an X-Spirit 2 = X-12, X Spirit 3 = X-14...etc.

Here's a Defiant for $345. Seller has shit-tons of other helmets. Has my Defiant colorway in a large for $350.

OK,, not to start something.

Here is my question, sorry if this is a thread hijack.
I bought my helmet as it was a discontinued graphic design, like this helmet.
Arai Defiant Jolly Roger 2 Full Face Helmet 2013.. From there ad.
SO the question is when does the 5 year time start. From manufacture or when we start using it.
This is from Snell
Quote:
Why should you replace your helmet every five years?

The five-year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.
Mine is about 4 years from when I started using it.
The date in the helmet is 2011.

Thoughts as I can't seem to find an answer when the time starts.
