How To: Install Helmet Headphones

Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible for anything that breaks or any warranty that is void due to this mod. Nor am I responsible for any injuries you may sustain or damage caused from being distracted with this how-to. Some states have laws against headphones while riding so check your local laws before doing this mod. Its not my fault if you get a ticket for this. Remember, this is public information, use it how you want but be smart how you use it.

So i just ordered myself a new pair of helmet headphones (my old ones went away with my totaled helmet last year)

You can easily do this mod with a pair of crappy dollar store headphones and a radioshack 3.5mm splitter:

What you'd do is pop the speakers out of the hosing and get double sided sticky tape (or velcro) and stick it to the inside of your helmet. It's pretty simple and there are plenty of how-to's for that on the internets. However, the only downside to tht method i find, is that the stupid splitter is too damn thick and u have to dig into the styrofoam stuff in the helmet for it to fit comfortably, with the ones i bought you dont.

So moving on, i purchased a pair of IMC Motorcom HS-200 headphones for $40 on eBay. I tested the sound quality, and compared to my old ones these are effing amazing. Loud, bassy, and thin as hell.

STEP 1

Remove the inner liner of your helmet (if you can, if not you're SOL)

STEP 2

Figure out the best spot to place you're headphones. This might take a little trial and error. For me it was just above the inflatable cheek pad.

STEP 3

When sticking the headphones in, make sure to allow the wire to go up into the padding above your head.

STEP 4

Route the connection wire out the back of your helmet and snap the liner back in place.

STEP 5

Now's a good time to find a place to hide the wire for when you aren't using it. Luckily for me my Exo-1000 has a little hump in the back lower padding, so I was able to stuff it up in there and not feel it at all. You may need to dig into the styrofoam to ensure an irritation free ride...or just let it hangggggg

STEP 6

Now it's time to connect the wires and jam outt!!! These headphones have a springy type wire that is long enough to reach the inner pocked on my jacket. If you keep your ipod on your bike or in your pant pocket you're gonna need an extension wire, which u can just get from radioshak.

ENJOY!!

I have that. That's honestly your best bet.. Screw plugging in manually with a clunky cable.

I use my iPod Touch with it and connect through bluetooth. If my iPod is dead I use my phone, and the good thing about using your phone is you can receive calls if you want to as well.

If these ever break (because they are chinese afterall..) I won't hesitate to buy another pair. I love this thing. I can't ride without music after having it. It allows all of the road noise you would hear even without music, but the music just kind of overlays on top of it. Unlike earbuds where it blocks out road noise.

On a side note, that is a very good writeup, and it works for any type of in-helmet speaker setup whether it be bluetooth or corded.

thanks guys...decided to do it at 1am so i could have my speakers in for work so figured, what the hell. lol.

I think im gonna have to reposition the speakers, they aren't as loud as i was thinking they were...but it could just be my crappy phone...we'll see.

this would be ideal if i had an iphone or ipod touch I'm debating on going back to the iphone just cause my droid sucks at handling music lol.

That and i just bought a 5th gen ipod classic for $60 off eBay

Nice write up, man. I had a similar system put in my Scorpion when I first got it, but I found that the heavy coil wire wore out the connection socket between the helmet cord and coiled one. Mine was a different style, though. Yours seems almost like an HDMI style connector, hopefully that will be better for ya then mine was.

Shiny side up!

yea your right its almost identical to an HDMI or an old Display port adaptor. On the box it says "USB" so i guess it's some sort of usb device? dunno, looks nothing like it to me lol
