Hey guys, see if ya can help me out. I have an 07 zx6r special edition. It runs great but now and then when i run it hard for a lil while it starts to act up slightly. Have only noticed this in the first couple gears due to speed obviously but at wide open throttle runs great and pulls great till it gets to around 14k and the best way i can describe it is it surges in power but not rpm and its a smooth surge. It will continue to do it as long as i hold the trottle wide open. If i change gears it will run normal again till it hits 14k again and the surge is back. As yal know redline is more towards 16k so i know its not that and it doesnt surge everytime. I run this machine hard alot and use the whole rpm range so its a lil annoying to shift early. The bike is stock as i might add except for the jumper wire mod. It did this even before the wire mod. Would appreciate any help yal might be able ito give. Thanks alot Chris.

I have the same bike (with the jumper mod) and I don't notice anything up in that RPM range. There is a noticeable surge at 8K, as that's where the power band is on that bike. I don't know why you'd get another surge over 14 though.
Also, where are you riding that you're running 14K+ on every shift, besides the track? I've got my shift light set down to 14K because at that RPM I'm already pushing 65ish in first gear if I run it that hard. I wouldn't consider shifting below redline a short shift.

Atomic,
I ride the mts alot and run hard and do drag race. I havent noticed a 8k surge at all but just the 14k now and then. Its like a smooth slow fade out of power and back over and over till i either shift or back off. Only reason i know it will keep on i held it to see it it would clear out or keep surging. lol I'm starting to lean towards running out of fuel cause it did it shortly before the fuel light came on. So going to fill it up and give it hell and pay more attention to my fuel level.
Yoshi,
I need to check into the spark plugs and fuel filter definatly its got 16k or 17k on it and dont know if they have ever been done. I got it at 13k.

It's very noticeable on mine.

At 14,000 is it like bogging down type surging?
Does it stumble somewhat at idle or sound rough?

I ask because out of the blue mine starting having the surging/bogging down in the rpm range at exactly 14,000rpm. To make a long story short, my #4 coil went bad. This is what I did to fix mine back then:
I got a newer coil. This time when I checked my original coils I got 1.4 on all four prong to prong. Then I checked left prong to bottom of the coil and got 9.4 on three coils and 8.6 on coil in question(they were sitting out all night out of the bike). 8.5 is lowest point of the range. Installed only one ebay coil. Swapped out the one in question at cylinder #4(one all the way on the right if your sitting on the bike) Warmed the bike up. Took it out for ten minutes. No studder at all. And in 1st gear I was able to get to 16000 rpm. Good to go.

Are you really hitting 65 in 1st? I guess Ive never had the balls to take my eyes off the road when pushing 1st.

I believe the 07-08's lowest shift light setting is 14,000.

03-04 will go down to somewhere in the 12s, pretty sure it was 12.5 but it's been a bit since I set it.

it sounds like a fuel ratio issue to me. Make sure that your air filter is clean and that you're running the right octane rating. no 85, no 110, just good ol' 91 or whatever you guys have in your area.

Runs smooth at idle and sounds smooth and i only run 93 octane with no ethenol gas in it seems to only do it when the fuel light is just about to come on and not sure what speed i'm hitting in first i go by feel and sound. i know the powwer peaks at 14500 and when it doesnt surge i feel it kinda stop pulling as hard thats when i know to shift but this problem hits right at 14k the temps here has dropped to the 30s this week so its hard to test ride it so all i get to do right now is research
