removal front sprocket - zx6r 636 a1p 2002

hi there i went to change the front sprocket of my bike this afternoon as im putting a sprocket set on. when i installed the chain previously i could not (did not want to) remove the front sprocket as when i removed the cover plate to access the front sprocket it became apparent that the previous owner had tried to remove the sprocket before and failed misserably he has morealess mawled my nut when he has tried to remove it before- the only cause of this i can think of is he has not use the right tools. please see pics.

i was not impressed after laying on my mind im wanting to give this a bash and finally get my new sprocket on has any1 got ideas to overcome this problem without causing any further damage?

try an impact socket mate and a big ass bar, a buzz gun might do more damage, an impact socket will get a snug grip

Also could try heating it up with a torch of some sorts. May break loose a bit easier if its tight as hell.

+2. I think its 90 ft lbs I think. I had to use a breaker bar/pipe and a impact socket.

12 point socket with give u more grip since it is already rounded off some. Also u add some heat from the tourch.

Make sure someone else is holding the bike while your untightening it! Just in case. Man that front sprocket is worn. Look at those teeth.

With the nut being in the shape that it is in you'll need all the help you can get. Heat will definitely help you out, it will help the metal expand and make it a little easier to get loose. That plus an impact socket and a long break bar will help make short work of it.

Go out there the night before... Put as lil penetrating oil on it.
Now... The fun part.
Here's what ya do... Ya get a big ole breaker bar, and a 12 point socket... 32 MM I think...

Attach the socket, pray it's not that loose. Attach big-ass bar... And heave in steady pulls... Don't get jerky, or the whole bike becomes unstable. Be sure and have someone standing by, next to the bike to keep her upright in ANY case. I have had too many bad experiences with power tools for bolt removal, so I refuse to use them. Impact guns, etc etc etc

But, if you even THINK you might do more damage.... Take it to the dealer, and let them deal with that shit. Yours is pretty rounded to risk on such a tight bolt......... If it feels loose, let them fight with it man. Trust me.

+1, I recently changed mine, and after the socket slipped once, I put everything away and called the dealer. I was embarrassed taking it in for one stubborn bolt, but fuck it. Swallow your pride, because sometimes its just not worth the headache.

Buy a new nut before you take that one off, or you'll have the same problem again

I haven't seen that it was said, I could be wrong and I've made the same mistake. I believe the sprocket nut is reverse thread. That may be why the Po rounded it off. Good luck.

thanks for the help guys, ive just purchased a new lock washer and nuts.

its the nut reverse thread, havent looked through my haynes yet?

plus will heating up not damage any bearing behind etc?

The nut is not reverse thread. you don't need a stupid manual, look at the threads inside the hole. I can see it in the picture, its not. It it were reverse thread, hitting the throttle would loosen the nut.

Put the trans in neutral, put a piece of wood through the rear tire so that it holds the spoke in the wheel against the wood and the swing arm and prevents the wheel from moving. Have a friend hold the rear brake if you don't think the wood is enough, but it's a lot more than the rear brake is going to do.

You'll need an impact gun and the proper size socket. You have to shock it loose, torch and big pry bar works, but having a GOOD impact gun makes all the difference in the world. My roommate used to do all his by hand, I had my whole swing arm off, lubed, sprokets and tire hanged, and back together in the time it took him to hange his front sprocket one day; and that the day he went and bought his first air impact

Yeah, the one we have apparently sucks donkey balls, b/c it wouldn't budge my sprocket bolt, I had to but a bar through the wheel and use a 4ft breaker bar.

Exactly! won't hurt to spray a little penetrating oil on it the night before, & get a new nut.
