ABS Repair

Hi All,

Took the fairings off my bike today, pretty much all of them have some damage or imperfection. I'm trying to fix these up myself, so I'm hoping I can get some guidance. I plan to use Bondo Fiberglass Repair kit to fix the cracks. Has anyone used this product or have suggestions on what I should get instead. After I fix the damages I will prime and paint the parts myself(rattle) and have the clear done with a gun.

DAMAGES

Front Wheel Fender
cracked on both side

Paint is chipped on the front

Left Fairing

Craacked, tried to repair this before with some plastic bond

One of the top pieces broke off. Whats the best way to put this back on?

Tab for blinker is broken off

Rear Cowl
Mainly skratches, but there is a crack too

Plan of action:
Work on one piece at a time. Clean part with soapy water, then clean water, and wipe the whole thing with a towel. Tape the exterior of the part along the crack. Drill along the crack on the interior to take away the paint and make a groove. Mix/apply resin, fiber, layer with more resin, another layer of fiber and smooth things out with a final layer of resin. Wait for it to hardend then sand the thing down(What progression in grit?). Do I need body filler or will sandable primer be enough?

I'll try and keep it shorter in the future. But, am I on the right track here?

I'm doing the same to my zx6r and my girls 250r becouse we painting them now. Afte I layed down a couple layers of fiber glass (wear gloves) I sanded it back with 280-320 grit, then I put down a light layer of bondo to smooth everything out nd fill in the scratches. I sanded that back with 800 grit wet sandpaper then primer and think about doing filler primer ( it will help fill in any scratches) then sand it down smooth with 800-up wet sandpaper now yer ready to paint.

Thanks, I might attempt it this weekend. Whenever I do I will post up pics of the progress. Ideally I'd want to try this on a scrap piece. I'm going to check some local junk yards to see what I can find.

pity i dont have pics of my old set of fairings

i used fibre glass with reinforced wire on the tabs.

it was red neck engineering at its finest it did hold for e few years so seemed to work..

you should be able to weld the plastic with a soldering iron

The mechanic at the local dealer has a plastic welder. I had him weld the lower fairing on one of my bikes and it is a good fix for the cracks. It actually uses plastic welding rods.

Is there much of a difference repairing with fiber and resin vs soldering? Both chemical bonds right, so both should be strong? Final result(is either way better for painting)?
