Oil light and red warning light flashing after oil change

Hey all,

Just got my 07 zx6r last week on Sunday, and the oil wasn't completely dirty but I wanted to do an oil change so I could have a starting point and keep track of the maintenance. Anyway,Iasked the dealership near me what oil they recommended and I used Kawasaki 20W-50. I drained the oil, changed the filter and put in about gallon of the oil. Started the bike and let it run for a few mins, then went for like an 8 mile ride. Now, when I turn the key on, the oil indicator and red light flash, but when I start the bike they shut off. then once I cut the engine off, they flash again. Before the oil change, the oil light and red light would flash for a couple seconds when the bike was turned on, then turn off. Now they just stay on unless the engine is running. I have tried " burping" the filter by unscrewing and screwing back, leaning the bike over as far as I could each side. in the sight glass, it appears there is enough oil ( between the lines) then I start the bike and it's way above the line. what should I do? any advice or input is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Light will always flash until the motor is running. The sensor reads for oil pressure... if it ain't runnin'.. it ain't gots no oil pressure.

Start it up... I betcha that little bugger stops flashing.

I'm thinking that you just didn't notice the light behavior prior to the oil change. This sounds perfectly normal, like PG said.

When the bike is running, the clutch assembly is spinning in the oil and splashing it against the cover and the sight glass, which is why the level appears to rise. It's not actually rising, it's just splashing.

At risk of turning this into an oil thread, verify this oil will be acceptable when your weather turns cold.

put your bike upright and level, after its been cold for a while. see where the oil lays when its cold. if its still above the top line, loosen the drain plug so some oil can escape. Do this as needed.

as stated, when the bike is on, but the engine is not running, the lights will blink. thats what they do.

Who told you 20W50? The book says 10W40, but like stated, the lights are working as advertised. Here's what the service manual says to use:

API SE, SF or SG
API SH, SJ or SL with JASO MA
Viscosity SAE10W-40

Sounds legit. Normal. That light goes out as soon as the oil sensor is satisfied.

Also, you're holding the bike straight up and down (off the stand) to check the level in the sight glass right?

I have a 07 and it does the same thing, its normal. I went to one of the dealership and asked the tech support peeps and they told me I dont have to worry about anything, blinking is normal when the engine is off but if it still blinks or stays on when the engine is on, then you got a problem buddy~

Thank God this problem was solved!! The drama was overwhelming, if not oppressive to the point of paranoia. I hate paranoia, and when I'm paranoid, I see things that are not there. When I see things that are not there, I change my meds. When I change my meds I feel like Superman. When I feel like Superman, I am invincible. When I'm invincible, I drive my ZX at 150 mph to the nearest college sorority house and show the girls my cape and tights. When I show the girls my junk covers, I get arrested. Don't get arrested; check your owners manual...

Drive your bike like there's a drone watching you... You'll survive, get really old and have to give your wife Viagra for Women...
