G1 Loud rattle/rubbing noise Cam chain tensioner?

I picked up a zx6r G1 today. it runs ok except for a loud rattle especially noticeable when the throttle is closed at higher than 2-3k rpm. It certainly seems to be coming from the cam chain side of the engine, and my research suggests its a common issue with the zx6r.

I will be whipping the fairings off tomorrow or next week, weather permitting, but it would be great if someone could impart a little wisdom for me. I am quite mechanically competent so not concerned that i couldn't work it out. However advice never hurts, i also could be barking up the wrong tree, might be something completely different.

Even better would be if someone is local to me in Sussex, England and could have a listen! I can dream.

Thanks in advance

I think i may be correct. I whipped mine out today and it looks different to the ones displayed on ebay as for the G model. I will order a new one and fit it next week, hopefully that will fix the problem without having to dis assemble the whole engine

It may have had an aftermarket tensioner like the APE installed. Can you post photos of what was on the bike?

See the attached photo. its not an APE, its definitely a standard item for something, but not from a ZX6R that i am aware of.

This is the trouble with buying second hand! If a replacement fixes the issue we are golden though. If someone could identify that tensioner that would be helpful.

That actually look like the correct OEM cam chain tensioner: Kawasaki Motorcycle Parts 1998 ZX600-G1 Ninja ZX-6R CAMSHAFT(S)-TENSIONER Diagram

It still may have gone bad though.

^^ that is what the tensioner arm should look like. I dont think this one is long enough, it offers no resistance when i push it in towards the chain. I would expect it to at least try to push itself back somewhat as it should now be at full extension. I will report back when i have fitted the replacement, should be here by Thursday. Thanks!

Soo see attached photo of one from my bike verses my replacement from a zx6r G1. There is about a 10mm difference in length... Im going to sound a bit British here, but I am so, BLOODY BODGERS!

I will fit it tomorrow weather permitting and let you guys know how it goes. i think this might be the culprit however

A question to any one who may know, does the flat ratchet side face downwards or upwards? The service manual shows an arrow where there isn't one...

Just to complete this off, I fitted the cam chain tensioner and the rattle is gone. Simple fix, happy days
