Stock 03 zx6r cam chain tensioner

I have a question about the auto cct. I did it the dumb way the first time by just backing out the small 8mm bolts a couple of mm. I heard a click or two. Sounded right with a whirring noise. So I referred to the service manual and followed the instructions to the t. Pulled it completely out, reset the cat, pulled it out 6 tabs, and put it all back how the manual said. Here's my dilemma while tightening the 12mm cap bolt I heard it click 2 or 3 times. Is this ok? Maybe just adjusting itself back out to match the pressure plate? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, when you reset it per the services manual procedure, it will click a few times while adjusting itself back to where it needs to be.

Ok was just making sure bc I didn't know if it could slip past something or overextend. So there's probably no way to get rid of my clicking without a manual tensioner then?

I wouldn't worry about the ticking, because it is normal for a Kawasaki. With a manual tensioner you are more likely to wear out the cam chain guides prematurely.

I have an 03 zx6r, I had the ticking as well. Replaced the oem cam chain tensioner with an APE manual cam chain tensioner and it made a huge difference, no more ticking, sounds great.

The auto tensioner will eventually make another adjustment, and be every bit as quiet as a manual adjuster.

The beauty of the auto adjuster, is it only works when it should, rather than being overly tight.

When a manual adjuster is set up incorrectly, it causes accelerated wear on the chain guides. Plastic parts that wear out, just like the plastic guide on top of the swing arm..... except you have to take the whole motor apart to replace.

That's the main reason I haven't used a manual tensioner. I'm afraid to screw it up. Maybe if I had a professional do it I would consider it. I'd rather deal with a little clicking over a screwed engine. Also having some cooling trouble lately. If there's a hole in my coolant reserve tank will it cause the whole system to lose pressure?

Where exactly is the hole?

Right on the side of it where you see if it's low or full. Bike got hot and I felt the hoses and they were soft with no pressure. So I checked the reservoir and it was dumping out the overflow. Before I realized it was coming from the overflow I tapped on the reservoir to see if it had anything in it and my finger went right through the thing. I didn't even tap it hard.
