Frame swapping questions.

Okay its been a SUPER long time since I posted here. I wrecked my 08 ZX6R back in 2012 kept it inside my garage till now and having it fixed. I bought a salvaged frame on ebay a few months ago when I decided to get the bike fixed for a great price. I have a Bill of Sale and the salvage title to the new frame that i bought.

I also have my title to the original damaged frame I wrecked around 5 years ago now. I was wondering if I swapped the frame out and still registered the bike under the old VIN/title without going through the whole hassle of the new salvage title - rebuilt title would I be screwed if lets say the bike was impounded for whatever reason (wreck/towed w/e else) and that saw the VIN did not match the title? I plan on keeping the old frame physically and the new frames paperwork. I LEGALLY own them both no stolen parts or any of that nonsense.

I know insurance companies do not care as long as the VIN numbers match the same bike and there is no insurance premiums being overlooked and or need to be paid.

I understand the legality issues when it comes to swapping frames because people steal bikes and swap the frames and try to get them re titled like scumbags. I own all parts so was curious if I just kept the old frame and all the paper work if something like this were to happen could I just show them all my paperwork/proof and be good?

Sorry if this is not in the wrong area etc just been searching all over google/internet and the answers and or questions asked from others are not in the same ballpark or its with cars. So just thought id ask around here or anywhere else to get opinions.

Thanks!

Also the bike was never reported to insurance and police report and all that after the wreck just towed it to my house and left it there for 5 years. So no insurance company has declared it totaled or w/e. Just my broken ass bike.

I'm no expert on title laws and I'm not exactly sure what you're asking but as far as I know the vin plate, which is attached to the frame, is what defines the bike in the eyes of the DMV and the insurance companies. If you swap frames it's an entirely new vehicle. If you insure and register your old frame while riding on the new frame, the bike you're riding on is neither registered nor insured from what I would think.
I would swap the frames and register the new frame even if it is a hassle.

Relax...

Yea your probably right... From that perspective I can see how the state can see it as Illegal still even if I own all the parts.. The only reason I would think the insurance company didn't care was I was told the wrong VIN before when I quoted them a bike in the past and registered it under them with that wrong VIN. Insurance company told me it was fine because they were the same bike so no legal issues there but I can also see how it would be a "different vehicle" Since the VIN on the frame and title would be different and technically could be fraud or w/e bullshit they could come up with.

Anyway thanks. It's nice to have an outside view on a subject I believed wouldn't be an issue, but could possibly be a real issue.

The salvage title i have on the new frame will require me to have pictures before and after the work is done and then have receipts to all parts put onto the new frame/bike and then they also told me a bunch of other clashing information between them and the people they have called/spoken to so at the end of the day it's like if the dmv doesn't know what to do how the hell would I figure it out? Thought id find an easier solution.

Dude, what you're talking about is illegal and you will be subjected to the legal consequences if a police officer ever pull you over or you're involved in an accident. If you're in an accident or pulled over and they check, you will be viewed as an unregistered and uninsured operator of a vehicle. If anything find someone who can re-stamp your old vin onto the new frame. This is also illegal but once done, unless the stamp job is crap, your law breaking days are over.

OP,

The bike you have at the end of the day is not the bike that you initially owned. You have a replacement motor in a salvaged frame. That frame will have to be registered and insured as a different vehicle than the donor (your old) bike.

anything else is going to eventually cause you a LOT of grief.

The value of that bike, with the salvage title is going to be less than a bike without a salvage title..... but either one is probably worth more than a broken bike's worth of parts in your back yard.

The reason this is not an easy process should be obvious..... what you are doing, is the same thing that people who steal motorcycles do. You are being painted with the same brush.

If you think it's too much of a PITA, sell all of the parts and buy a bike with a legal title. Mistress of Mayhem (MoM) was looking in to a stunter frame for her collection of parts to make into a bike.

The deal there is the same as what you face; proving that all the parts are legally obtained in the face of the vast majority of situations where they aren't.

"There's this adage that we have 2 ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Unfortunately with the Internet people have taken this old adage and turned it around. They have two eyes and 10 fingers so they think they need to post 5 times as much as they read. And since they have 10 fingers and one brain, they only have to think 10% of the time! "

Just to give an update.

I asked this question initially because calling the DMV and asking them was fucking confusing to say the least and I was starting to panic that the frame i bought to fix my bike would not work. I called shops around me and talked to them about it. They have done this process multiple times with buying damaged bikes and reselling them etc so I don't have to mess with the DMV for answers anymore. I can let them take care of calling the courthouse and the troopers to stamp the bike legit and letting me know what paperwork and all that fun stuff.

Can call this officially closed for me. If anyone ever finds yourself in the same situation just talk to a shop that knows how to properly swap frames. fuck the DMV they either don't know shit about the process or just treat you as a thief.. very frustrating when your legit.
