Throttle cable too short

I have a 95 zx6r which has street fighter handlebars. The throttle sticks so when I rotate it, it doesn't snap back. I took apart the assembly and I've had a look at the cables. The pull cable only has maybe 1/2cm of length past the sheath at the throttle side when installed in the carbs. I believe this is the problem.

I've tried rerouting the cable, locking all the adjustment screws so I have maximum length and I've checked the idle screw own the carbs. I've pulled the cable out entirely and the free length remains the same regardless so I know its not related to the handlebars. There definitely should be more length than a 1/2cm, right?

I have no idea how to fix this and i'm concerned that if I buy another cable it will just result in the same problem. Just wondered if anyone had any idea what might be going on?

wrong cable would be my guess

Take a picture of the end hooked up to the carbs

then remove the cable entirely and simply pull one end out as far as it will go and measure........ You should have about 90-100mm of interior cable extending past the exterior sheeth

I do not have a 95-97 cable loose handy..... but do have other ZX6R cables and they all come between 90 and 100mm

Stupid people say stupid things on the internet, so be wary of who those people are. If you solicit advice on the internet, just keep in mind 99% of what you'll receive is not based on fact or science-and likely atleast 95% of it is based on bullshit and bravado regurgitated from some other schlub who also did not experience any of what they claim and are also full of shit. If you don't like my bluntness- too bad. I am not here to please you, so move along, your approval is not desired nor is it needed. So before opening your pie hole and adding more stupidity, perhaps sit back, listen, absorb and learn something. You know that saying, it is better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!
