Help fixing bike.

I bought a ninja 250 back in 09' and moved the ca but was unable to take it with me so I left it at my parents house. When I left they said they would store it and start it every now and then to keep everything moving. Turns out they never did any of that so for the past 5 years it's been sitting in their back yard uncovered in rain sun and snow. I just went and got it and there are multiple problems. Tires flat, chain rusted, black plastic is weathered grey, brake fluid leaking from front lines, gas cap seized closed and that's just what I can see. What should I do with the engine after sitting for so long? I know I need to replace the brake line, fuel line and rebuild the carb but what else should be looked at? Drain oil. Pull plugs.

Get some winter fogging oil.. Good spray.
Hand turn over engine, would actually be a decent idea to rent a bore scope for an hour to look in cylinders.
Drain all fuel, empty lines, carbs will be rebuild time, injectors = keep fingers crossed.

Brake fluid replace, then inspect operation.
Tires throw out.
Chain, most likely same if it had more than a couple thousand miles on chain also replace sprockets.

NEVER EVER trust your parents again.

At least your stuff was still there, mine sold it and spent the cash.

I'd also rebuild all the calipers and master cylinders, replace the tires, replace the battery, pull the air box apart and make sure no critters moved in.... plan on completely rebuilding the carbs, you may have to replace the fuel tank depending on how much rust is inside.

I just got it taken apart. Lots of wasp and mud dobber nests inside the frame. Pulled the oil and a little bit came out, drained the front and rear brakes, drained what was left in the coolant tank. The rear brakes are locked open. The tire spins but when I push the pedal it's solid. There was a lot of what in assuming is break fluid on the front forks and the pads are drenched. The file cap is seized up so the key won't turn but I was able to unbolt it and remove the entire cap. It doesn't look like there's rust in the tank but it's bone dry and smells like really old gas.

SO,, fill the tank. Let it sit.. Plan on dumping it out later put use a filter then into a lawnmower or a company truck.

All the other bits. Penetrating oil, at least once a day.
Figure one to four weeks. Patience pays.
Brakes will need new seals at a minimum along with master's. Might wait until you can get the pistons out to see if they are badly pitted. They might need to be placed.
The forks will also need new oil and seals.

Engine, pick an oil. Marvel mystery is decent. pour some in the cylinders. Get some cheap stuff for the engine.
With tank off, lay the bike on the right side. Let's the clutch plates get a good soak. (it's most likely dicey also)

Might consider if you just want to part it out.
Just about promise to get it right, you will spend more than it will be worth when done.
If you have time and patience and like lost causes, push forward.

My vote is part it, I did a lost cause. Still trying to get 25 cents on the dollar for my lost cause.

So far I've got about $600 in parts that need to be replaced and that's just the obvious stuff like tires, chain, brakes etc... The air box was pretty nasty and oily. I'm pulling the carb out today so fingers crossed that nothing's ruined inside.

The more you ride, the more you will come to appreciate small, simple, lightweight motorcycles. They may not have much in the way of acceleration but they sure do pay you back at the pump and at the parts counter.

A perfect tool for hitting the track, TBH. Use that bike to gain the skills -- it will accentuate everywhere you can be smoother and more precise, because you cannot compensate with power. If you want to go fast, you HAVE to be good.

How do I clean out the oil tank? I've drained all the oil but the little window on the side is still showing some oil in it and is very grimy looking. My plan is the reinstall the carb, new air filter, oil filter, oil, battery, plugs and attempt to start the engine. What else should be checked before trying to start? I took apart the tank petcock and the filter attached to it was ripped but I cannot remove it. It is pinned into the base. Is this normal? It broke off as I was trying to remove it.
