rear tire mounting question!!

Hey quick question, what all is entailed in dismounting and mounting a new rear tire to its rim? Anything other than the obvious that a certified tech should be involved in?.. My dad has owned many BigOTire franchises where during breaks i would work; mounting, dismounting, balancing, flat repairs... so im very proficient with that kind of work (for cars, trucks, anything else besides motorcycles cause ive never done one)... I am new to the bike world and didnt really know if bike wheels and tires were much different... I have access to mounting and balancing machines but for cars. Am I able to do it myself from what is available? Thanks guys.. Dismounting and mounting tire from and to rim is the question.

thanks hicky... i was hoping for a less than $1000 option... im in college pretty far away from home. Also if my pops was still in the business of the tire world...He decided to retire early with a stupid amount of money... (bye bye cost priced tires and any car performace parts at cost ... yeah it was nice!!!).... is there anything i can do with a regular car mount dismount machine w/o alot of hassel?..

DUDE i know Ima get hell for this but ive done it with the Metal Spoon looking thing you guys have at the Tire shops, shop grease and 2 drunk puerto rican guys well three with me included.....Lmao lmao lmao laugh

I bought some tires and needed them put on asap since the metal was showing on mine. My father use to own a shop so ive been working on cars my entire life and my friends father ownes a shop/tire shop soo he has knowledge

this is what we did

diflated the tire then put all of my weight on the tire to break the bead from the rim put the metal spoon thing underneath to grab the tire to bring it over the rim as soon as you do that the tire will old the spoon tight inbetween the rim and tire this is where the grease comes into plat spread the greas on the rim and with a rubber mallet ease the spoon around the tire like the machine does soon as the first side come out the outter side should follow

for the mounting grease the portions that slide onto the rims and get a fat friend to put weight on the tire and ease the spoon around to make the tire fit on the rims and vowla tires on the rim. I was careful enough so not to scratch or chip my rims but this method worked perfect for me and was much easier then using the Manual Tire changer ive used in the past People are going to say no blah blah blah you going to ruin the rim Blah blah blah well ive done it 4 times already with my bike and friends bikes and non of us have had any problems or scratched the rims. Good Luck

for the last 2 years i've used 2x4's, spoons, sweat and tears (Lot's of sweat and tears) and manhandled the crap out of them (wheels look horrible, after i scratched first time i quite caring, which made the job Much easier. breaking the bead was often difficult, once i figured out the "valley" taking the tire off the wheel was a breeze, mounting is even easier again after the "valley" was figured out. (you're wrist's, fingers are going to hate you when you slip)

i Swore i wasn't going to change the tires on my new bike (09zx6r) because of the green wheel strip, didn't want to scratch them up.

if you change less than a few sets per year i'd just pony up the $ and let someone else do the work (i wouldn't dare take a bike "In" to get it done, just remove wheels) but if you're doing multiple swaps, doing it yourself can save you hundreds easily.

PS. you may know this already, but a warm tire (set in sun, etc...) is SO much easier than a cold tire to break a bead, dismount, mount. fyi.

id get it done at a moto shop... i wouldnt want my rims scratched at all! and if not balanced correctly they will have a super sketchy wobble riding down the road. i dont know how much it would be where u live, but here they only charge me 40 bucks mounted and balanceed. its worth every penny to me knowing its done right!!
