Backup lid adventures! (helmet)

So after a friend of mine made a comment about always riding in a expensive helmet (i only had one helmet at the time which is a shoei x12 ) i went to look for a cheap everyday use helmet so my x12 could take a break,i used it for my short commutes to work and back too. So i first tried fleabay with no luck for wat i was trying to spend so i checked craigs L and found an arai rx7 wit some scratches on it but im in the process of repainting those areas...its not perfect but for $100 i couldnt pass it up.. its hand made! Its crazy how i bought this used arai for $100 and its lighter than my $600 x12! Of course i completey cleaned the entire helmet. My x12 is a med. And the arai is a sm. When i tried on a med arai before it had too much wiggle room but this sm fits like a glove ...for an everyday use helmet i think this was a good find and id rather use a used arai/shoei over some other brands anyday.... anyways go see what you can find i saw a lot of good deals there

I have always been told that you should never use someone elses hemet because it ends up getting moulded to the shape of their head on the inside....

my philosophy, if it aint cracked it's good. Plastic shows even the smallest stress fractures...go look at my old scorption exo-400...flew into a guys back window after he decided to do a K-turn right in front of me...and it almost ended up in his face...

but yea, if you run ur hand over a helmet you can feel for dimples and cracks pretty well, you'b be amazed what abs plastic can and can't withstand

I would NEVER buy a second hand helmet. In all honnesty it's hard to judge if a helmet could have been droped at a shop or when you have brought it... It's taking a far greater risk when someone else has acctually used it.

I was filling up my bike a few weeks ago and I had my girlfriend with me... For some stupid eason she put her helmet ob the pillion seat... when I had finished fueling up she didn't remove the hemet... But instead let me kick it across the forecourt... idoit woman... there was hardly a mark on it and it hit the ground hard. we had to ride home since we was 50 miles from my house, and then she wasn't aloud on my bike till the helmet was replaced.

Just saying that for me, it's not worth the risk at all.

The only way to really know about a hemet is to have it xrayed. May sound crazy to you, but its the only thing between your brain and the pavement or whatever hard object you hit. Find a helmet you like and treat it like you would a baby.

Doesn't sound crazy at all. A friend of mine went down one time with his Shoei helmet on. He hit his head but it had only a couple scratches but no cracks or bumps on the outer shell. He called Shoei and found out he can send the helmet to them and they will x-ray it to see if it's cracked or not.

But his story alone shows that you can't go just by it only having a scuff on the outer shell. It could be cracked internally where you can't see it.

Although a friend of mine died at the weekend... Some of you have posted on the thread... My other friend Wayne is going to make a full recover because of the gear that he brought was 100%
