It's all becoming a bit of an oxymoron. People are basically saying, "No, I can't be trusted to make informed decisions over the risks I'm going to take with my own life." What's to stop them from outlawing motorcycle riding?
This is old news though. This topic has been posted time and time again and there is no real solution.
Helmet laws generate revenue. End of story.

I voted no, because the government doesnt need to be making choices for me.
If insurance companies want to do things a little different like putting into their policy of higher rates or refusal to pay if you do not wear a helmet, i am fine with that, as long as it is communicated to the customer.

Law to wear a lid in aus..
I came off once at slow speed and cracked side of head on road
Ended up with slight concussion if no helmet would be a he'll of slot worse.

People get confused over this one.
The short universal answer is no. The issue is not whether you should, but whether anyone else has the right to tell you that you must. I will never ride my motorcycles without wearing a helmet.
Unlike eye protection, which directly bears on how you're going to be able to see and thus influences the safety of others, a helmet provides protection for you alone.
I will never accept that the government can tell you what to wear. I understand that:
the ostensible reason is personal safety, but
the government could restrict anything you do for the reason of personal safety, including leaving your house, so (therefore)
personal safety must not be a valid reason for the government's telling you what to do.
See the distinction? I'm talking about who owns you.
Edit: I'm reading the rest of the posts and it looks like many people have already reached this same conclusion. I'm in good company :-D.

While I voted "no", there wasn't really a choice that I liked. Here in the states it is a State law, not a Federal one. More and more often, the feds here make laws to protect us from ourselves....which is bull shit IMO. I am more ok with it being a State law, but I still don't like it.
I understand the theories folks have brought up about "taking a bug or rock and losing control" and the one about how the other motorist would feel. I simply hate that decisions are made "for me" by any government body. I feel the same about the helmet laws as I do about the seatbelt laws. This world resembles George Orwells 1984 more than he could have imagined.
Would I wear one anyway? Yup. Why? Because it is a wise choice. I just don't like Big Brother involved is every aspect of my life.

I say people should be aloud to ride how they want, if you dont want a lid go ahead but then I think the persons family that decides to ride without a helmet should be responsible for paying for therapy for the people that saw their family memebers brains all over the pavemennt.

There was a rally a while back in NY or PA or somewhere. They were protesting the helmet law, anyway a few bikes got tangled up and riders went down. One man hit his head and died. The surgeon at the hospital said that if he was wearing a helmet, he would have been able to save his life.
Irony...

Amanda | I may be mistaken but I could of sworn there was a helmet law here in Fl. saying if you choose not to wear a helmet you must carry some sort of insurance, but if you ride with a lid insurance is a option.
Oh and I always have my lid on my head. Bugs hurt.

In my mind it's equivalent to a seat belt law for cars.
