I'm writing a paper for one of my classes and I live in the state of Florida where there is currently no helmet law. I know that every state is different and every country is diffrent as well. I am wanting to get peoples opinions about the helmet law in your area. Helmets or no helmets. Which do you think is better?
Please be sure to include your opinion on this situation and why or why not you like or do not like the helmet law for your area. Please also include where you live.
Thanx everybody!!
:-)

Yes.
UK; it already is the law over here and it has proven to save lives, but does not get a warm welcome everywhere as it does not look as cool... |

I voted no because big brother shouldn't be mandating every aspect of life. I don't think it's the law here in IN, but I could be wrong.
I wear all the gear all the time by choice, same as I wear a seatbelt in the cage all the time. To me it just makes sense, I don't need the gov. telling me I have to.
It's just anecdotal evidence, but out of all the mc accidents I've worked on whether the rider was wearing a helmet or not (most don't here), head injury has not been the issue. It has been nasty rash and serious bodily injury that are the most common in my experience.

I voted yes just beacause ive known people to get in wrecks just learning to ride and if it wasnt for their lid they would have probably not been with us. Most states require seat belts why because you never know what could happen

it's iffy, I think you're stupid if you ride with out a helmet, but I also believe that it's up to you weather you wanna ride with it or not. The more laws we have, the less freedom you have. Also if the person is riding without a helmet and has no insurance, guess who's gonna end up paying his/her medical bill? Us the tax payers.

I would vote no because I feel it should be a personal choice that government would not be involved in if it were a perfect world. But it isn't a perfect world, and I see the government interest in mandating helmet use. So my actual answer is yes. As the world is, government funds are spent on health care, disability, social security and such for head injuries that could have been prevented with a helmet. Helmet laws are not meant, honestly, to protect the idiot who chooses to ride without one, but rather the tax payers and insurance companies.
In my perfect world, there would be no compulsory helmet law. There would be a law stating not one cent of public funds would be spent in connection with injuries that could have been prevented with a helmet.

I voted No, I personally will always wear one. They are currently in the process of passing the no helmet law in Michigan. I feel about this the same way I feel about a seat belt. It should be your choice it should not be a law telling you that you must wear a seat belt or must wear a helmet. Granted both will save your life and I will continue to use both. As stated big brother doesn't need there hands in every aspect of our life.

I completely agree that government should not be involved in every aspect of our lives. I do, however, note that we invite government into aspects they don't belong. Let a guy who rides without a helmet, even in a state where it is required, because he believes there should not be helmet laws get permanently injured in a way a helmet could have prevented and, still, the first thing he'll do is start the process to collect social security disability. Enter the government's interest in that aspect of our lives.
On a related note, insurance companies are big fans of and have lobbied for helmet laws. I believe, but could be wrong, our insurance rates are cheaper because of helmet laws.

i voted No,there is a helmet law here in California but I think everyone should be able to make up there own mind if they want to wear a helmet or put on a seat belt, i don't think the gov. should be able to tell you what to do..like make everyone get health insurance. I would wear a helmet no matter what ...that is my choice.

Law here too.. but confirming what others have said, even if it wasn't I'd still wear one always, 'cos to do otherwise is really friggin' stupid !
(IMO)
It doesn't have to be YOUR stupidity that only gets you hurt on a motorcycle too!

I live in Florida and started riding when Florida actually did have a helmet law. They repealed it after tons of lobbying from the Harley/biker crowd. Now we get to have between 8 or 20 deaths a year at bike week every year.
Plus, I don't really want to have it on my conscience if I hit you in traffic and you die because you didn't choose to wear a helmet. I know pretty selfish but since I never ride without one, I don't think anyone should. I consider it a minimum level of equipment that a motorcycle should have. I know this is apples and oranges but vehicles are required to have tail lights. I don't want someone to have the option to omit them just because they don't like the way they look. There some things that vehicles should be required to have, a motorcycle should be required to have a helmet.
