Some people obviously don't buy sportbikes with the intention of learning how to ride well.

I'm in the same boat as the OP except my 600 isn't stretched and I've been riding a little over 2 years.
I rode my moms 04 Zx10 and I fell in love. But I think i'm gonna keep my 6 mod it out first then get a 04 Zx10

Don't let these guys fool you, you can mod the hell out of your ZX6 and it isn't going to make it comparable to a liter bike. Your still not going to have the low end or mid range torque and your still going to have to rev the piss out of it get it to go.
I can understand exactly where your coming from living in Florida. The roads here suck. You have the seek out any kind of curve in a road here. I'm sure Orlando is similar to Tampa, the traffic is miserable. If you can find a rode with some curves, it's lined with houses, cross streets and stop signs. And it's filled with cars going in both directions.
If you really want to have fun with your ZX6 and find out that is has a lot more to offer than what you can experience on the street, take it to a track. If I wasn't going to go to track days with it, I'd probably sell the ZX6 as well.

And even with the boring traffic clogged roads, I still don't know why you would need a 1k. But at the same time, it's your bike, get what you want. Don't look to a forum to choose for you.

its just odd to see people acting like motorcycles are weapons out to kill you, they only do what you tell them to...yes its easier to do on a 1k, but ive seen people learn on 1000s, people whove never touched any motorcycle in their life. two of my friends did actually, one learned on a TL1000, never dropped it in the 3 years hes been riding and hes no slouch either. another friend bought a 2008 1098 after we got back from deployment, i laughed at him at first, told him he would kill himself....over a year later, the bike still hasnt tasted pavement and hes a good rider. and as for these people saying "omg 1000s are hogs man they cant corner for shit, i ride a 636 or 600 and can toast 1000s in the twisties!!!!" well good for you, you ride with people that dont know what the fuck their doing, goto the track with someone who actually knows how to ride a 1k and watch them eat you alive.

Everyone is terrified of the liter bikes or thinks they handle like a Harley. And the "I'll eat them in the twisties" is like saying your racing on the street (which a lot of people are). Your not going to out run them at anywhere reasonably close to the speed limit.
The liter bikes are a lot of fun on the street and they are super easy to ride if you aren't ham fisted with the throttle. Just put them in 3rd gear and drive. You can lug them along at 30 mph or just turn your writs and rocket up to whatever speed you need. I will give you that it can be an adventure in the wet. But with the newer liter bikes mostly all having traction control and multiple power levels, I'd think they are easier than ever to ride now.

Do what you want man.. when I first got my bike I was scared shitless because everything on the internet suggested I should get the 250. Here I am, still standing. So if you fuck yourself up I think its gonna be your own fault and not the bike's.

Rode through there a few weeks ago w some friends and u couldn't go over 35 mph roads where so tight.

i started on a 1000 and would never ride something less on the street. the power is fun and definitely nice for running around the town.
i have a 600 for the track though. personal preference.

I can see the appeal to getting a 750 or 1K for the street. The low end is awesome and they still handle great. People forget that 1000s are just street legal race horses. Put a competent rider on a 1K and they will shit on any 600. The insurance cost of a 1K kills that idea for me however...
Get what you want, just be aware that the 1K will be a totally new game and it can get you in trouble with one good crack of the wrist. I would suggest putting your 600 to stock height and ditch the extensions and ride it like that for a bit before making a jump, just to give yourself a different view point.
Be safe.
