Here in San Diego we had a problem with a motorcycle junk yard being part of a motorcycle theft ring. So from now on I do not give my real address on receipts at places like that. Hell, one of our local dealerships had guys working in it that would take your address from the purchase slips and then steal your new bike days/weeks later.
Using the information listed in that Reddit AMA I purchased Xena disk locks and wire security cables for the bikes. Have not had a problem since. We took away the target of opportunity label from the house.
When i lived at an apartment there were no garages but we had covered parking. I bought the biggest cable lock they made and cabled it to the pole. The cable was very noticeable when driving through the parking lot and it never got stolen.

First of all, just so you know, I'm a retired Captain with the Sheriff's Office here in my home town/ county. I was the Marine Officer, and before that the Special Investigator and Intel Officer for the Sheriff, a Detective Lieutenant, etc., etc.
Had I been privy to this information beforehand, I would have genuinely reconsidered former posts where I talk about my illegal activity.
Good post GL, my bike stays outside but out here in the boonies, no one steals sportbikes. Only 4-wheelers, dirtbikes, and Harleys.
I know everyone can't do this but my prevention of my bike being stolen is parking it in my computer shop show room at night or my living room. An if someone comes in at night they will be met with either of these.
