Need Help for a High School Bike Build Project!!!

So, those of you that have been around a while might remember that I posted quite a long time ago now that I was working with a group of high schoolers to try to build up a bike into a track bike after school (original thread here). Unfortunately, I had some change of responsibilities in my job as well as change of subjects I teach and I dropped the ball for a little while.

While I was busy not helping much, the kids managed to make a big old mess of the engine that we had just finished rebuilding a month or so earlier. Now, I've been going through it with a few kids to try to figure out what's wrong and what we should do next. As it turns out, I think what we should probably do next given my continuing lack of time to help them fix it, is get a new engine.

I really want these kids to be able to see their work finished up before they graduate in May and I don't see a lot of other options for getting that done (more due to my life and work than anything else). It would be too expensive and time consuming to try to track down all the individual things we need to get the engine repaired and I don't have the time or the money. So instead, I'm going to see if I can get help getting the money so that we can replace the engine with a used one and get this bike running.

That's where you guys come in. Any donation you would be willing to make to our GoFundMe page would be much appreciated. If you don't feel able to donate yourself, but you are sympathetic to what I'm trying to do, I'd love it if you would just spread the word around this forum, other forums you're a part of, facebook, and wherever else you might be able to help us wrangle some support.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If you or someone you know would like to make a tax deductible donation to us not through GoFundMe (donations to which I don't think are able to be tax deductible), please feel free to contact me at pvandenberg@westmichiganaviation.org

Thanks in advance for your support and your help in spreading the word!

What engine are you looking for?

or what parts do you need?

yeah I understand you want to get a used engine to replace the one but....

Stupid people say stupid things on the internet, so be wary of who those people are. If you solicit advice on the internet, just keep in mind 99% of what you'll receive is not based on fact or science-and likely atleast 95% of it is based on bullshit and bravado regurgitated from some other schlub who also did not experience any of what they claim and are also full of shit. If you don't like my bluntness- too bad. I am not here to please you, so move along, your approval is not desired nor is it needed. So before opening your pie hole and adding more stupidity, perhaps sit back, listen, absorb and learn something. You know that saying, it is better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

The engine in question is a 99-02 Yamaha R6.

As for parts, I don't know the full extent of it at the moment, but there are broken bits of metal scattered about the lower end. I believe there is significant damage to at least 1 connecting rod - that might be what the bits are from. Additionally, we've got a bunch of bent valves.

I certainly regard you as an expert, Rivers, so please feel free to share any thoughts or advice you might have.

FWIW, you may also be able to source a motor from the FZ6.... I think that one ran from '01-'09 (I had an '05), and that motor was the previous gen R6 engine. Slight re-tune as I recall... Even if it's down slightly on power, it should bolt right into the frame.

"Basic stuff fellas. Use your head for something other than to break your next fall."

"There's this adage that we have 2 ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Unfortunately with the Internet people have taken this old adage and turned it around. They have two eyes and 10 fingers so they think they need to post 5 times as much as they read. And since they have 10 fingers and one brain, they only have to think 10% of the time! "

That, I did not know! Thanks for sharing! Maybe that will help keep the cost down if I've got more options!

Got the engine out today and we're going to tear into it to see what's going on over the next week or so:

That would be pretty awesome if you do. We've got decent headers, but the rest of the exhaust is pretty seriously beat up from one of its previous mishaps...anyway, the engine on this guy, and therefore the exhaust we need too, is a 99-02 R6
