2-6 through 2-8 Mid Atlantic commutes

Monday, it was 35F in the morning. 40+ in the afternoon.
Tuesday, it was 50F. 65 in the afternoon.
Wednesday, it was 55F. who knows.

This makes it somewhat difficult to select the appropriate riding gear. It almost seems like it's time to break out the summer weight gear.

The other thing that stands out, is how polite the drivers are being right now.

It's different enough to comment on; when I approach cars which are occupying the fast lane, at least 4 of them have voluntarily moved to the right to allow me to pass.

As long as that lasts, I make a point of giving them a wave of thanks -- that's one with all of my fingers. Positive reinforcement...... I know there's always going to be someone on either side of the divide that is suffering from cranial impact; I don't have to let that affect my process. If I can provide a 'good' example, maybe that will stick in someone's mind. Probably not, but it's better than dwelling on the negatives.

"Basic stuff fellas. Use your head for something other than to break your next fall."

"There's this adage that we have 2 ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Unfortunately with the Internet people have taken this old adage and turned it around. They have two eyes and 10 fingers so they think they need to post 5 times as much as they read. And since they have 10 fingers and one brain, they only have to think 10% of the time! "

I always have my 'summer weight' gear (1pc leathers)

I just wear thermals underneath (PBB Plus Base Layer System | OThree Custom Drysuits) its for a drysuit but damn its warm (i've been sweating in 3C temps)

but car drivers being nice. they must be putting something in the water down there!!!

I have been doing the same thing - always wave out to the cars that pull over by a foot or two on a single-lane carriage way to let me through. Positive-reinforcement. We're not all dickheads on bikes...

There's evidence that people that are involved in accidents with motorcycles have no direct personal interaction with motorcycles, or people who ride. they simply don't place any special awareness on 'road users not in cars'.

Anything I can do to spread awareness, I am willing to do so.... provided that's a positive response scenario.

Totally. On the opposite side of the coin: One of my instructors said as an experiment, try riding around with a half-faced helmet and a skull chin-mask. Apparently it's amazing how differently motorists treat you. Not that I agree with this approach. I'd rather humanise myself (like you suggest) - otherwise we're just a leather-clad robot with no feelings/emotions.

.... which is why I always ride with a clear visor, and sunglasses underneath (any more, the shades are amber tint which you can see through). I want the person in the car to be able to figure out where I am looking. When you take that away from the other drivers, you are making a presumption that they will somehow understand you are (or are not) looking at them..... not something to be relied on.

People in hoods or masks will do sh*t that they will not when they are as naked as everyone else. A FF helmet is close enough to that to cause some animosity already; making it impossible for anyone to 'read' you at all is perceived on a subconscious level as hostile.

I've made the mistake of walking into my bank branch with my winter riding gear on, including my balaclava -- it ends up looking like an armored ninja -- and very nearly had them hit the panic button thinking I was going to rob the place.

Some people here will actually move over into the shoulder to let you pass. I definitely thank them with a wave as well!
