Bike choices...

Don't really know where to put this so it's here.

Long story short is my girl wants a bike and it's been settled on a ninja 300.(I kinda want one too). Anyways, my question is they have 2016 left over on sale for 4k (+all the other bs). Should I buy a new ninja 300 which will most likely be dropped and crashed as it is her first bike and all or get a used bike for 3500 and not feel as bad about it. The problem is the $500 difference makes me want to get new...

Opinions and thoughts?

New: 2016 ninja 300 black with abs - 4k
Used: any under 3.5k

Why not get her an older ninja 250 for a season, or even half a season. That way she can drop it and you can still sell it for the 1k bucks you paid

If you can't pay cash, don't buy another bike......

So buy (very) used, and see how it goes. If you still need a better bike in a few months THEN buy the almost new bike somebody else dropped, and got scared off.

The depreciation on a brand-new bike is staggering. Let someone else pay that. Very close to 100% of bikes hit the ground at some point. The sooner everyone gets over the first boo boo, the better.

Invest in the best riding gear you can, instead. It will outlast the bike, if you are lucky, and good. Spend every thing else on training..... that will pay off for a lifetime.

So I'm going down to the crack dealer either this weekend or next (revzilla) for a jacket (dianese d1 or A* gp-plus) for her and a helmet. So the gear is taken care of.

I can afford to buy the new one the question becomes should i...

She doesn't want the 250 and I don't really know my way around carbs so I'm not very confident in being able to tackle maintenance issues...

However the 250r is very appealing to ME...

Ask her which one she would rather drop, because she's gonna drop it. Ask me how I know.

Carbs are stone simple and reliable..... If they are clear of junk, and not fiddled with. There are many more bikes with carbs, than FI.

Start it from cold. If you don't like how it runs, walk away. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

If you are buying the bike, potentially you have some say as to what you buy, right?

I've only bought new since I'm the kind of person who keeps vehicles until they're run to the ground and likes to keep an impeccable service record . . . and I've dropped 3 out of the 3 bikes I've owned. . If you're not going to keep the bike long might as well buy used.

I dropped my TL1000 trying to pop start it, which pissed me off. I also dropped my dads gs650 in his yard when I was learning to ride it, soft landing but still dropped.

I also had my front tire slide going down hill and turning in my driveway on my gsxr like two weeks after i brought it home. I almost broke a finger that was stuck under the front brake picking it back up. I also hurt my back, but it didn't touch the ground. It was literally laid over passed the edge of the tire, the tip over switch activated and shut the engine off. Ask me if I could do it again and the answer is almost definitely a no. If I wasn't so stubborn, cheap (not dropping 12k dollars.), fit enough to do what I did, or the bike had moved just slightly different it would have hit the ground. So count it as a drop.

It's gonna happen. Might as well drop something she doesn't care about the first time.

The 2008+ 250R's are NICE! I had one as my first bike. It has about the same top speed/acceleration as the 300 and looks just as good or better. I got more compliments on it in a year than on my ZX-6R! LOL

At the prices I'm seeing the 08+ 250s going for it might as well get a 300. 3000 for a 250 is way too much

They hold their value. I bought mine brand new, put 10,100 miles on it, and when I traded it in, the dealer listed/sold it again for the price I paid for it new!

Ninja 300's are awesome bikes. If they weren't I would of sold mine but here it is next to my zx6r.

I really like tracking my 300, tires last forever, comfortable, cheap on insurance and gas. New vs used really just comes down to whether you're keeping it long term or not IMO.

I also recommend Yoshimura frame sliders for the 300. Saved my frame twice during two spills.

I'd try and find a nice, clean Ninja 300 used that has already been dropped. You're looking for some paint scratches, some bar end scratches, and the lowered cost. Then you get the newer bike but don't have to pay quite as much.
