2012 zx6r

New to the site. Looking at a 2012 zx6r from a coworker of mine. He got it for his wife brand new she put 600 miles on it. Been sitting ever since then, in his garage. He starts it up ever so often. He's asking $6500 for it. KBB says bike is somewhere in the 6,200 price. Is it a fair deal or should I just pay more and get 2013. Let me know what you guys think, all I've ever owned was suzuki's so I know what they go for. Don't know much about Kawis.thanks in advance.

KBB is bullshit when it comes to actual values.

The bike is worth how much you are willing to pay for it. Check what local comparable bikes in your area are selling for.

Btw, the 13-current is almost the same bike as the 09-12. Small changes to the plastics, some electronics, and they increased the stroke on the 09-12 engine to get to the 636 displacement. Not sure if all of that is worth more money to you or not, figured I would let you know though.

A 5+ year old bike that has very low miles on it is likely going to have some issues which will need to be addressed. tires are almost certainly out of date and should be replaced. brake fluid, suspension seals are also common areas with faults when a bike sits for extended periods. Micro switches don't like sitting in the same state for years. they tend to get stuck, or corrode and fail.... or both. That's the clutch lever, side stand, and kill switch.

the battery is probably toast, or near it. there may be issues with the fuel tank, if it's been mostly empty for multiple years.

I'm sure it looks really clean.....

As I am riding an '09, I can't tell you if the bigger motor in '13 is enough to cause a ruckus. I'm certainly happy with the performance I have now.

As has been said -- the price you pay, is the price you want to pay. if you are happy with the deal, that's the only thing that matters.

"Basic stuff fellas. Use your head for something other than to break your next fall."

"There's this adage that we have 2 ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Unfortunately with the Internet people have taken this old adage and turned it around. They have two eyes and 10 fingers so they think they need to post 5 times as much as they read. And since they have 10 fingers and one brain, they only have to think 10% of the time! "

NADA has the bike at a low retail of about $5800 and a high retail of $7580. If the bike has barely been ridden and is in perfect shape then $6500 is reasonable.

If a new one is 10k OTD, you are saving 4k and getting a 5 yr old bike. I would prefer the 636 and the latest technology but for 4K, it's up to you.

Also resale is lower on a older bike. Think about that. They are both solid machines. It is hard to fault a Kawa 6.

I have just bought from a dealer a 2015 model, anniversary edition 5.000 miles for GBP 6.500. There are more similar models on Autotrader.

The speed difference is noticeable between the 599cc and 636cc motor but if you aren't gonna race it, who cares?

I had no idea the 2013 was a diffrent engine. I thought it was just fairings and headlight that changed. That's something to think about. I always try to think about resale value when buying a bike. I checked in my area found a 2013 selling for $7500 with like 3,000 miles. I might go with that. Seems like a better deal, I see the 2012 is same as 09. Might be easier to resell a 2013 when the time comes.

Technically it's the crankshaft that's different

Depends on who you ask, if the person owns a 13+ they will tell you its a big difference.

Folks who have a 09-12 will say it's nothing noticeable.

I myself have owned an 11 and a 13 zx6r, and i couldn't tell any sort of difference as far as which one was more powerful. They are both strong for the 600 class.

Oh, and there isn't a different engine. Kawi increased the stroke to get to 636 cc's. It is almost an identical bike, and a lot of parts are interchangeable between the two.

I bought my 2012 zx6r for i think 6800 out the door from a dealer. It had 1500 miles on it. Everything on the bike was immaculate. But like RJ said, i changed the fluids and the tires were inside a year of being expired.

Now i will say that it was the best deal i saw after a few months of looking. And also take into account that this is in the Bay Area. And everything is more expensive here than anywhere else. People shit money here and kick you out of where youre from. Anyways...

I think its up to you to decide if its a good deal or not. Maybe try to talk hkm down a lil bit.

I paid 6400 for my 2012 with 1100 miles last September private sale and yep had to change the tires and all the fluids etc.. Like the post before this one I'm on Long Island where everything is expensive, so 13s were going for 8500...The bike is very similar to my buddies 13. On the Dyno mine made 112 with Leo Vince slip on, mid pipe and gutted header, his made 115 with full titanium akrapovic....The 13 has more midrange, and will most likely be easier to sell but they are very similar bikes. I'd say if you can talk him down its a good deal.
