Going to Deals Gap Tail of the Dragon

I'm heading out there 6/30-7/3. Do anyone have any recommendations of things to do out there. I've searched "things to do" on line and found a few ideas. I hope to hear from people that can point me towards incredible experiences that I can share with you. I only really have 7/1 and 7/2 to enjoy myself out there since 6/30 and 7/3 will be mostly traveling day. I live in NYC, and from what I recall from my MapQuest search, it will take me 8 hours to get there. Scenic views, incredible restaurants, places I must visit are all welcomed. I plan to ride the Dragons tail, but that is not all I want to do so please share your thoughts...

Yeah, you're right, I just double checked... I may have seen 12 hours when I first searched and my mind reduced it to 8 to make me feel better about the commute. I am driving down, towing my bike, so it shouldn't be too bad. The hotel is already booked so the only thing that needs to happen is me finish putting together my project SV650 that I'm taking and gather information on things to do down there.

On the Dragon, weekends are not fun normally.
Best thing is the shop to get your shirts and stickers.
Do the speed limit, don't cross the yellow lines. EXPECT a semi or 5th wheel trailer.
Of the 6 trips, 3 I encountered a truck with a 5th wheel that had my lane blocked.
IF I was ripping it pretty good chance it would have been bad.
I like the skyway, bootleggers is nice. Many great roads and some nice app's for your phone that will direct you to the type of roads your looking for.

Ride around corners as if someone could be coming into your lane...because sometimes they will be. The gap is filled with a whole bunch of people that think they ride a lot better than they actually do. I hug the inside line whenever possible.

While there, check out the Cherohala skyway. Gorgeous scenery. Almost exactly 100 miles from the start of the run is an ice cream shop (if it is still there) that had really good ice cream...we used to try to make it in under an hour :-p

Be aware that there is a 1000' drop and no runoff in many places on this run so do not push past your limits here.

If you are staying overnight and have not yet booked, there is a place called the two wheel inn about 20 minutes from the gap. Way better prices than what places closer charge and there are attached motorcycle garages to your room.

I'm staying at Fontana Village resort that I booked months ago. I hope it meet up to the good reviews. Thanks for the riding tip everyone, I'm going there for the experience, not to make the road my personal track. After I discovered the track, I completely lost interest in breaking the laws of public roads. That's another reason I didn't invite my biker club members. They are still young minded with their riding evolution and sometime I get caught up in the hype of aggressive riding so I try not to go places with them that can have me regress in my evolution.

+1 on the Cherohala Skyway! Love that road!

There is also a road somewhere around there with a waterfall you can drive behind/under (the ride to it is great too). I'll try to find the location and post it.

The speed triple I have 4-sale for a family who lost there loved one. He was a experienced rider, but in a moment of STUPIDITY, checking out a KTM 1290 died on the Skyway.
There are many homes, and business that have drive ways on BOTH sides of the road. A truck making a legal left hand turn did not see him as he came around the corner doing over double the posted speed limit.

Be safe..

OH, unless things have changed. Don't remember if I mentioned in this thread. It's illegal to have a tail tidy or the licences plate move from stock position unless you moved it further back. A group of 12 speed triple forum members all got tickets for this infraction.

Thanks for the information on the plates, I'll make sure to mount it properly. I usually do not so this is great information

When I initially read this post, it did not sink in what you were trying to tell me. After a while it sunk in about being careful around the corners. Yes I do not plan to ride silly but I cannot control what other people d so I have to ride safe for myself and other people. Thanks for posting, I wasn't thinking possibly taking me out until highlighted on it.

I booked a place once I deicide I was going. I ended up booking Fontana Village resort based on the good reviews.

Are you sure on this? Were they perhaps missing lights or had them mounted horizontally or moved towards the middle of the bike? The law is just this here:

3; § 20-63. Registration plates fastened; altering appearance of registration plates.

(d) The division shall provide registered owners of motorcycles and motorcycle trailers with suitably reduced size registration plates.

(e) It shall be the duty of each and every registered owner to keep the registration plates assigned to such vehicle reasonably clean and free from dust and dirt.

(f) No false numbers

Display of a number plate in other than a horizontal upright position, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

Talking to my friends that are LEO, they said it just has to have a light. Lawyer friend said that plate violations (other than missing one or using a stolen one) is not a primary offense. Though I'd need to double check with him since I was only half listening to him then.

If the LEO says your good. Then your set.

What was, versus the what IS. The later is all that matters.

Might make a copy and take it with you. Just in case.
As long as your following the law, you should be good.

Have fun, get some extra shirts. LOL.
