Over the years it's become known that we get a lot of duplicate posts asking the same questions over and over again. Many times some of the questions can be quickly answered by finding the posts that have already covered the question. But in the past it seems people either do no SEE the search feature, or do not know how to properly use it. That's where this tutorial comes in!
The search feature on this site actually works VERY well if you do a few clicks to get to the advanced search area.
At the top of every page you can see the main links to get you to certain areas of the forums. Below that are other links where you can change your profile, see new posts, etc.... and SEARCH for a topic or keyword!
By clicking on the "search" tab you'll get a drop down menu where you can simply enter a keyword or, if you notice at the bottom, "advanced search". While the small box WILL help you dig up some posts, it's not always the most efficient as many have noticed. Sometimes you might not get anything relavent to your question. This is where the "advanced search" comes in. Click on "Advanced search":
You will now get to the Advanced seach page. At the top left of the page you can put in a few keywords to help you find what you're looking for. In this case I'm looking for the best tires for my bike. Instead of typing out "What are the best tires for my bike?", which won't get you very many threads, use simplicity and shorten it... remember... you're putting in keywords to help find the thread you want! In this case I used "What Tires".
Then I click the drop down menu asking it to "search titles only". This will make the search feature only look for those keywords in the threads title and not the entire body of each thread.
You can also choose which areas of the site you'd like to search by going down a bit and selecting a specific forums in which to search. In this case I'm searching ONLY in "Mechanical and Technical".
So... I'm looking for "what tires" and seaching only thread titles in the "mechanical and technical" forum only! Neat-O!
This will greatly help narrow your search!
Once I've gotten everything I want to search done I scroll to the bottom and click "search now" and WHAM-O!! Here's what you get!
As you can see... I've now narrowed my search to only threads with "tires" in the titles and looking only in the mechanical and technical forums. If I wanted more choices... I could search again and choose a different forum to search in... or just not select any and it will search ALL the forum thread titles.
I hope this helps some of you with searches! Have a groovy day!
Now.... go forth young Jedi's and search to your hearts content! Search for OIL this time and see what you get! Edited To include additional information provided by moderator
Also: If you click on the dropdown located at the bottom left of your screen, you can select how you want the results sorted. By relevance, by title, by date posted, etc. This will help you get the most out of your search experience because by default it will bring up the most recent threads.
If everyone would start putting "tags" in the new threads they generate this will also help make it easier to pull up an old thread on the same topic.
Also note that you can follow this same process in a particular thread.
So, if you don't want to sift through pages of feedback in the stickied threads you can search each thread for the relevant terms (such as year) that you would like information on.
