I Ride: 2007 ZZR600 (2002 zx6r clone)
first post... hello everyone (new york)

hello everyone my name is slick (s2ik).
I'm a new rider (2000 miles in) and I own a 2007 Kawasaki ZZR600.
While looking for parts I've learned that she is the same as the 2000-2002 zx6r.

At first I didn't understand why an 07 had a carburetor but i see what Kawasaki did...

so i have a little background in electrical and restoration(railroad interlocking machines) it's what I do for a living but this ZZR has been kicking my but.

After my last ride she has not been starting, she cranks but wont start so i was going with easy stuff first...fuel, battery, engine cut off switch, and kickstand switch and all was working as designed... then i thought of what it needs to run fuel, air and spark.

so after downloading the service manual I have been checking systematically, she has fuel and air but no spark.
she has no spark on all four spark plugs so I put new ones and still nothing.
the stick coils look good but I bought used ones to double check (could be bad too)

the crankshaft position sensor passed the bench test...
I have no idea how to check the coil ignitor leading me to the forums to see if I'm missing something, I also bought a used one to play with...
so i plan on doing a few write ups with pictures as I mess around with my zzr, I've also done a few simple mods I'd like to share...

I mean that's what the forums are for right... to share, learn and exchange information..

I had that problem once. Turned out to be a banana in the tailpipe. Sounds similar to your problem, but probably isn't the same thing. Worth checking for the hell of it.

I'm sure RJ or Rivers will be here shortly.

Slick,

I would not expect the ECU to pack up suddenly... usually there is a period of worse and worse performance for that. I don't know if the kill switch would allow the bike to crank(my '09 will not crank with the with the kill switch open), but I know for a fact that it does cut the ignition.

I'd suspect an electrical contact has become dirty enough to stop the connection of something important. Typically, I start this sort of troubleshooting by taking each electrical connector apart, and applying dielectric grease so I know it won't corrode in the future. While I am chasing wires, I look at the insulation on each one and make sure nothing has melted or shorted out.

It's always a good idea to check all the fuses, too......

RJ2112,

I'm hoping it's not the ecu (+$400 new). I bought a used one to play around with
(ebay $50 probably junk), I connected it in hopes of seeing some change, but nothing changed
I have my doubts about it being the ecu, but I also have no way of checking it to rule it out. but it's good to know there should have been symptoms before it gives way.
All my fuses are good and I checked almost all my wires with my multimeter for continuity.
i still feel like I'm missing something though... but

Pull the relays and check them as well.....

I don't recall if you said the age of your battery?

If you don't mind me going through the same steps you already have, what are your indications that spark is missing? Are the plugs wet when you pull them after trying to start it?

Voltage reading before starting. Voltage reading as you try to start it. Next spark. Do you have it and is it strong or weak. Plugs wet or not? Gotta figure if it's fire or fuel.

I checked all plugs and no oil or gas was on them, they were dry.
I'm sure if i kept trying i would have flooded the engine and wet the spark plugs I started my trouble shooting with the fuel system and everything was good, fuel was getting to the carbs so i switched to electrical and the first thing i checked was the spark plugs. I grounded the spark plug to the engine case while it was connected to the stick coil and hit the starter didn't see any spark while the engine was cranking, I did this to all of my spark plugs then again with the new spark plugs then again with the new spark plugs and coils i got from a part out, then I tried the new spark plugs and all the stick coils on each wire connector... i did every configuration possible and I never seen the spark plug ark leading me to believe it was the cdi giving me problems so I bought a used one and hooked it up and nothing changed. After that I check almost all my wires and continuity was good on everything I checked...

My 09 zx6r, is hesitating to speed up when i hit the throttle. And it will not go above 120, i cleaned air filter and use gas treatment, any other riders experiencing the same problems? Could it be my spark plugs
