I will (hopefully) turn 56 this summer. Been riding off and on since I was 12. If you want to ride, then you will ride.
The biggest caution I will toss out there, is you may lose energy more quickly than you expect. I find I get colder faster than ever, and also dehydrate more easily. Your focus and situational awareness are key.... both will be degraded if you are tired, cold, angry, hot, etc.
Just be aware, and take what steps you need.
The rewards are most certainly worth the risks, especially if you manage them intelligently.
I am 56, I ride long Euro-style bike holidays. One item I always take with me
is my Camelback hydration backpack
! I pour one bottle of fruit juice & one bottle of Gatorade. This is to restore electrolytes, & keep me hydrated, etc.
I also take breakfast bars, etc, and protein bars, I also bring along jerky for added protein & long sustain energy.
Any trip also sees me taking along my First Gear electric jacket/gloves. One never knows when the weather gods will become fickle/mercurial.
