United States Coast Guard

Ladies and Gentlebros...

Are there any uscg gurus around here? I'm in the process and need some vital information...

regarding education and advanced rank:

I have been researching and such and have found many people say that if you have 60+ college credits, after boot, you advance to e-3 with a pay raise..

some sources say that no longer is a thing..

Does anyone know for sure or can anyone get some CURRENT inside information on the subject?!

I took the asvab and qualified for all jobs and will be choosing ME-Maritime Enforcement.

Can't answer with any accuracy--- been out of recruiting for 16 years.... If you have the equivalent of an Associate's (credits, hours, whatever) you could receive advanced rank. The needs of the individual service dictate how that works.

Get it in writing, regardless.

As you would improve your time to be promoted further by a couple of years, it's worth the effort. I would expect the E3 pay to commence when you went to boot, but not get the rank until you graduate.

IMHO, school guarantees are probably more important. Job location is never a sure thing, so don't expect too much in that regard. Odds are pretty high, you're going to be stationed near the water.

I am active duty USCG, been in for 13yrs. Best thing I can tell you is ask your recruiter, things have been changing alot over the years with enlistment and pay grade concerns as we raise the incentive bar higher as we are overwhelmed with potential individuals wanting to join. When I joined it was 40+ credits and a 4yr enlistment or 6yr enlistment was automatic E3. Granted that was in 2002 lol

im not saying that coast guard recruiters are as a bad marine corps...but im sure they will fuck you over just as hard. be sure to read every page of your contract and ENSURE your paygrade say E-3 ( should have a reason to like 60 hrs college exp), make sure it says your specific job on it AND that you meet every requirement including color vision and your vision/depth perception are okay.

Everything is negotiable, timing will help especially if recruiting is slow. With that said, I was in the Army so I could be way off
