Sanctuary's big trip down South

Boy does that sound rude. But any way, me and two mates headed off over the Cook Straight for a week down in the South Island. The ultimate aim was to attend California Superbike School at Ruapuna in Christchurch. This was my first trip down that way on a bike. Been there before but usually fly in/fly out. I now realise it's a travesty. Anyway got on the Ferry, figured out how to tie my bike down (don't laugh) and waited the 3.75 hours to get there. We then set off through Picton, then Nelson, down Lewis Pass and finally into Hanmer Springs for the night. Nice little tourist town with hot pools and good food. Ironically the motel we were staying with had a couple of cops staying there too. I figured they'd have some terse words for us but it turns out they were really nice. We even agreed that everyone should learn to ride before they get their car license. Due to the earthquakes they have to police the Lewis Pass route as it's heavily utilised by trucks as the normal State Highway 1 (SH1) is buried under a ton of rocks in places. So it is really busy and lots of accidents.

Day 2 saw us head off to Greymouth on the West Coast. We bumped into a fellow CSS participant who had an MV F4. Then shot through Arthurs Pass to Christchurch. Man, the roads there were incredible. This is the same place where they shot Narnia and some of Lord of the Rings. We did some serious speeds and I felt "one" with the bike and the scenery, if that makes sense. Just awe-inspiring. I have some pics which I will attach.

Day 3 and 4 was getting to grips with a new track and doing Level 4 for the umpteenth time. I knew my coach from a previous time and we spent quite a bit of time going back and revisiting some of the shit I never learned in Level 1 and 2 because I just wanted to go fast previously (like a dick). Anyway my coach said he was impressed how I (finally) listened and applied what he asked. My favourite moment was on the second day, having four coaches chasing me and not getting by (whilst my mates were watching). All the coaches own their own bikes (ZX6Rs mainly but a couple of ZX10Rs too) which surprised me. They just got a decent deal from Kawasaki. My coach confirmed that my bike has a ton of poke and he couldn't keep up with it on the massive straight (1.3km) - his is pretty stock apart from gp shift and track fairings. So it felt great to hear what I've done to the bike has had a positive effect.

Day 5 was a mad trip up to Kaikoura to see the devastation of the earthquake. The road was pretty fucked (road works galore) and I kept getting thrown out of the saddle on sections. Took some pics and then headed off to Murchison where we were staying for the night. Day 6 saw us cruise back to Picton via Blenheim. Got to see some of the wineries in Marlborough and was reminded of Martinborough. Definitely need to go back as there's a ton of automotive and aviation attractions. At the ferry terminal I bumped into a fellow Corvette owner. They'd just had their Nationals that weekend and got 107 cars (large for New Zealand). His was a '72 454, supposedly one of three that are documented with the National Corvette Museum.

Spent today cleaning the bike as it was covered in shit from all the roadworks thanks to the earthquake...

Enjoy the pics.

Oh yes, I forgot to say I have a new favourite track. Ruapuna is godly. A bit of everything there. Fast and flowing. Tight and slow. Elevation changes. The dipper was awesome and the other guy with me kept grounding his fairings on it. Nuts. I was warned to be careful ahead of going through there as it's a favourite place to high-side. The main straight is nutty. I now know what happens when you hit the redline in 6th...

Yeah, coach bikes. That's Damian and Ash's 2016 ZX10Rs. They've got the full race kits on those so effectively they're ZX10RRs. Boy were they fast. And they looked fucking evil too being black/green.

Epilogue...I'm off to Taupo for two days at Bruce McLaren track in two weeks. Dillon Telford will be my coach. I think I might be addicted to track.

The back-pack is an Oxford 36 ("First Time" I think, why they call it that, I don't know - it's not like I'm a virgin). The panniers are Givi (borrowed from my sister) but reversed. I had a set of Oxfords that were similar that basically burned through in traffic on the exhaust and exploded when the CO2 canister I was carrying got too hot. The Givi's seem to have heat-reflective material in the bottom where as the Oxfords don't. Ironically the Oxfords have a life-time guarantee so I'm going to try returning them but my suspicion is they'll say some cr@p about being incorrectly mounted (get out of jail free-card) even though I bloody well tied them up clear of the exhaust, or so I thought. The traffic was abysmal that day so the exhaust must have sat around and got directed upward. Very strange...

Looks like a hell of a fun time. Also New Zealand has some unbelievably amazing scenery from what I can tell! It's definitely a bucket list place for me to visit some day. In fact, if I ever make it there, I think I would like to just rent a motorcycle and just ride...like all over and see the country. That would be awesome! It's a bummer it's so damn far away from everywhere lol
