tips for leaning low??

hey hello all,

I just got a pair of new michelin double compound tires (pilot power) and I lean lower now, but I just can't get to the last inch of the wheel edge, we call this in Mexico the fear meter, the closer you get to the edge, the less fear you have to lean the bike, but when I get to this point I can fill how the rear tire slips a bit and makes me feel very unconfortable, even when wheels are warmed up, I just installed a new steering damper an it feel much better but I steel have problems using the whole wheel profile,,,,, any tip, advice or recomendation?

thanks..

Depends on the suspension settings you have currently, tire pressure, and body position.

If you have too hard compression settings your springs will be "hard" to compress and cause you too feel like you have hard tires or like you said instability at low angles.

If you have your body all crossed up (ie: ass hanging off and body crossed up over the tank), the rear tire has too much pressure on it causing it too feel unstable (because it is).

If you have too much air in your tires the same feeling can occur to.

Are you trying to do this on a track? I sure hope so...

see my how to: click this link question for all you cornering gods

if your using the posture correctly, and you still have more room to lean, a steady throttle hand and consistancy are your best allies. of course practice practice practice...

if you feel you can get lower, your 110% sure you can, and everything is perfect, but your not getting that little extra lean, try sticking your chin out and down into your forearm directly over the mid point between your wrist and elbow. ive seen guys even rest there chin on it. it oddly enough works by letting your head be that little extra weight outside the CG point to let the bike lean in.

another point to consider is how relaxed are you on the bars? you should have a lite grip, do not white nuckle the bars. the bike wont respond properly and you will be fighting it the entire time.

i can get so relaxed on the bar i can let them go in a lean and make a turn. dangerous yes but it can be done.

if you bike and you are perfect, and it still dont work, try my method mentioned above.

first time i rode on the chicken strips was on a turn im very familiar with. i started outside of the turn working my way in, before i even got into the turn, i slowed down to a fast pace speed and also dropped my gear down to second. now in my mind i telling myself to hold that line. i roll on the throttle a lil and i begin to drift out of the turn, now i need to lean harder... i shifted my body further out, push down on the bar a lil more and stick my head further out in the direction im going while..

once out of the turn, i knew i got the chicken strips... my boy who was behind me saw it and told me holy crap you got low... i can say im extremely comfortable with my bike

its all about practice and reading on other peoples advices

Dont worry about it...that type of thinking will get you to ride over your skill level and wind up on your head.

If you are feeling like you are going to crash...you probably are close...listen to your feedback and lose the ego...or if you cant let it go you can buy some of take offs

i also learned how to ride lower by reading the book "A Twist of the Wrist 2" it gives u tips from the pros and explains to u very clearly the steps u need to take. ur gonna have to leave ur comfort zone a little in order to get better. just work ur way down slowly and eventually ull get. biggest advice i have is to not let off the gas or slow down in the middle of the turn. ur more likely to crash that way...

Its funny cause I always try to not have the bike leaned over....more upright means I can get on the gas harder

+1 ...it ain't about leaning, or dragging the knee persay, its about control. Learn to 'control' the motorcycle correctly and the rest will come together.

It has been said here already, make sure you are relaxed on the bike at all times and it will be easier to control. Your arms are ONLY there to manipulate the handlebars (and to stop you falling over the front when braking) and all your body weight should be taken up by your legs on the seat/footpegs. Go to a track and ask an instructor to give you some tips on correct riding before you go and kill yourself trying to loose the chicken strips. Don't seek riding advice on a forum either...its full of wannabes and know-it all's (like me ).

I found that the confidence for leaning the bike further came with the more I rode my bike. Don't push it to much at once just push that little bit at a time. :-).
