Good thread.
I actually did it once on reflex, in a left hander
Radius decreased on me unexpectedly fast , tapped the brake got the leg out there, pretty sure my boot hit the ground as I leaned hard to save her

I think I've used the back brake once on the track.. lol. And rarely do I trail brake... I usually have my corner speed pretty set before going in.

I've asked this question every time I watch a motogp race. Funny that the riders say they don't know why they do it, it just happens. I was hoping for a more insightful reasoning from the fast guys.
I get doing it in the dirt but on pavement I'm still totally baffled why you would do this.

Also, like I said, its not something that is regularly in my repertoire but occasionally when the situation is right it comes out and drags on the ground. Also, I believe had Rossi never done this I still would as the last thing that is going through my head at the time I use this technique is "be like Rossi." Mind you, a lot of racers use it ALL the time, in every 'fast to slow' corners now so maybe its something of a copycat technique for many.
Anyway, race day for me so better go get shit happening! |

well gents, i asked my race coach why he does it. he says alot of pros do it to counter act the gyro effect on forward motion. it allows for much easier turn in under high speeds and under high breaking loads. he used the example of a pin wheel spinning around really fast upright as normal...this is you coming into a turn at high speed... if you turn the pin wheel to its side the wheel slows down even tho the wind hasnt changed. this is your bike tipping in much easier with the bike slowing in a controlled manner but not stopping.
if you think of it, it makes sense.
at least to me it did.
iv tried it, it seems to work very well when i corner left than it does to the right. i kind feel like im in my ol motocrossing days.

I believe I read it in "Sport Rider" mag, but not sure. Several pro riders commented in a similar way "helps to stabilize the bike under hard braking and late turn in".
From what I gathered in the rest of the short article, it is very similar to a figure skater in a spin. The physics behind it anyway. As a skater extends their leg or arms, the spin slows down. If they pull back in then the spin speeds up. Many of us have experienced the feeling of our rear end fish-tailing under hard braking. By extending a leg, a rider is pretty much doing the same thing to slow down or counter act a fish-tail. Also, (because the extended leg is on the inside of the turn) weight transfers to the inside.
It made sense to me, but I'm not at a level where it would be of any use trying to do it. There are plenty of faster riders in the local clubs and they aren't trying it yet. Maybe after I get that #1 plate....... |

There is already plenty going on for me with braking, hanging off, finding my turn in point, finding my apex and so on. Not going to throw trying to stick my leg out into the mix just yet.

Hmmm interesting, I always wondered why they did it.
