So why do the guys in some of the upper echelon of racing put their leg out like they are MX'ing? The video below shows what I'm talking about, heading into turn 1 you see multiple people put their inside leg out before heading in, they bring it up before getting into it.
I watched "Faster" earlier today and some guys eluded to using body positioning to get the bike to turn at fast speeds but I'm confused where the foot thing comes in at |

Good find. I still wonder though, it has to have a physical meaning behind it, all these people can't be throwing legs out "just because." And if they are, thats one big placebo prescription.
But that article did rise mention to gyroscopic effects at the high speeds racers see coming into the corners. I wonder if the leg out is enough shift their moment of inertias that it actually does translate into an easier to turn-in bike. We probably wouldn't notice anything by trying it on the street since the effect is squarely related to velocity (in the simple case at least).
Would definitely be interesting to research and model....

I watched "Faster" earlier today and some guys eluded to using body positioning to get the bike to turn at fast speeds but I'm confused where the foot thing comes in at | I've only used it a couple of times and it was only when I went into the corner really hot...really late braking and the bike was pretty ugly. I didn't think about doing it I just instinctively stuck it out and what do you know...it helps stabilized the bike just before I started tipping in. have no idea how/why but it seemed to work. |

so when they stick their right leg out, they're only using the front brake and downshifting? good example is 2:17

I remember reading that they do it to block off the rider behind from passing |

And any that do its a thumb brake anyway and not a pedal at your right foot
