Correct... if you do the math... when they pulled out of racing altogether in '08 they had two things in mind. Build an ass kicking new 599cc bike that would trample the rest. We got the new '09 ZX6R. Then a couple of years later... ZX10R.
When they pulled out of racing (MotoGP and AMA and even WSBK) they used that money saved to invest in R&D. Probably what Yamaha is doing now (if you remember they just pulled all factory backing for teams this year).
What you saw in 2010 was the rebirth of more race teams, even not backed by factory money, looking at the Kawi's. Attack Racing in AMA. (though not backed by Kawasaki directly)... Countless European teams are on Kawi's now.
You'll start seeing more Kawasaki teams in the near future. For sure in AMA and WSBK... and possibly sooner than later in MotoGP as they are all going to 1000cc engines.
All comes down to money. They needed to refresh the stock. But the money being spent on racing (and not winning) was drying up the accounts. So shift those funds into R&D, let the racers see for themselves what they have to offer, and you'll start seeing factory money coming back into road racing. (They still pump a shitload of cash into Supercross/Motocross)
