Comet Racing: It was finally time to speak out

I have been battling myself over this for some time now and this may be controversial since I know others on this forum also use Comet. (Slo is an example) The reason I haven't posted anything is because they gave me sponsorship (albeit a very small amount) last year and it feels wrong to me to talk badly about anyone assisting my race program, regardless of quality. The reason I've decided to talk about Comet is because I've decided the potential danger is too great (being on of the most vital piece of safety equipment in a crash) for me not to speak out and I'd hate to see someone buy it, because they saw me wear it, then have it fail on them. I'd feel partially to blame, knowing that I could have said something. I will copy my post from my Instagram today then post up a few of the flags, that weren't mentioned in the post, below it. They weren't mentioned because not all of them are safety concerns and because the post was already long-winded for Instagram.

Quote:

This week's #TBT #ThrowbackThursday goes to my VERY LOW SPEED crash at #JenningsGP in my #CometRacingLeathers. For those of you who know Jennings, I lowsided in turn 9, arguably one of the slowest turns on the track. I also was almost immediately in the grass. That tiny bit of pavement blew a golfball sized hole in my arm, completely ripped off the shoulder "slider" (which was reminiscent of tin foil), and did various other damage that made its way through the leather. I wish I could say I was shocked, but the quality of the suit worried me from the start. The thin leather, although light, is DANGEROUSLY THIN. It was the culmination of red flags in quality, bad communication, and disintegration of my suit from low speed crashes that led me to go with #GiMoto this year. The quality is night and day difference. I must admit, the price was much more expensive, but you get what you pay for and, in my opinion, life and limb is worth the upcharge. I will be carrying leather swatches with me to every race weekend. Some taken from GiMoto suit sections and some from Comet suit sections. I want to give everyone the chance to see for themselves what they're getting themselves into when they buy these off-brands. This isn't to say all custom suit brands are bad. Take for example #Heroic leathers. They are amazing quality and have an eerily similar appearance to leathers made by companies like comet. All I ask is that you do research, reach out, and don't let appearance fool you.

#JosiahBurkeRacing #Lowside #Highside #MotorcycleCrash #MotorcycleLeather #RacerProblems
Some of the additional flags were:
  • The protection in areas like the elbows feels like little more than memory foam
  • The zip-out liner only zips out half way and cannot actually detach from the suit
  • The "removable" back protector was over twice as wide as the removal opening.
  • The custom patches and design work were poorly silk-screened and started fading and smudging immediately
  • The sliders included were so poor, just touching the pavement made them literally melt

EDIT::

It appears that they have severely increased their prices since I became sponsored (likely due to their increased popularity) and, dollar for dollar, you can get an off-the rack Gimoto for the same price. They're no longer even a discount brand. Do. Not. Buy.

Good to bring it up and talk about it, so others won't have to wade through the same mess.

I'm still looking for a custom fit suit. Looks like I'm going to keep saving for that Dainese. Starting at 2k

If my opinion matters, I would urge you to seriously consider GiMoto. They are equal to Dainese in quality. Their attention to detail is absolutely out of this world and their customer service is bar-none.

I had a funny feeling about them when I was asked if I'd like to try them out by a Comet rep. I turned them down because I'd not heard anything about them. Kinda glad I did now.

The depressing part is that I'd trust the Sedici one piece over the comet suit....

Good call and I agree. I know a few racers out here that wear their stuff and they love it. Colleen also seems to be really happy with hers so far. Did Mark end up getting one or is he still wearing the NJK? Last I heard he was still in the NJK.

Ya, I have a couple friends with unique physiques and they had to get a custom to be comfortable. I have seen crash tested Pilots too. They definitely do the job. PG here is a pic of my track bike. Hope to see ya at Button.

I bought an RST from Riders Discount for $549.00. They are from England trying to break into the U.S. market. Thus the low price. Fits great and appears to be of good quality. Leather thickness, seam quality, armor quality and placement etc. Check um out. I am well pleased and hope to never crash test it.

Just to clear things up, I had not even heard of Comet leathers before today so I am not sure where you thought I might be sponsored by them ZZR =)

I actually run an A*...but that is another thread coming.

I will be making a call to Pilot.

I think he's still got the old one. Last couple of times out I've been controlling in B & C and he's been controlling in A so we're passing each other most of the time and usually in our street clothes when we're BSing.

Which date are you coming out? I'll keep my eyes open! You'll probably see my bike parked out front of a huge ass hauler when you're driving in.

If I'm not working tech inspection come and find me... unless I spot ya first.
