Although no burglary is funny, let alone expensive bikes....I'd like to point out the irony in this....Tyco, their main sponsor, is a security systems manufacturer....you'd think they've have their bikes a bit more secure

My question is these bikes are so specialized and unique what the hell are the thieves going to do with them... so many one off pieces that are immediately recognizable it's like they are asking to get caught. Even parting the bike is a risky proposition, anyone willing to buy the parts will know where they are from... like a one off Motec electronics, WSBK spec Ohlins suspension, Suter swingarm... wtf you gonna do with all that shit

Clearly you're not a thief! You're bringing logic into this now. I'm willing to bet that's not how most of them think lol

1) Commit crime
2) Ask questions later

But in all honesty they can probably part them out and sell a lot of the parts. Sure there are quite a few custom parts in those bikes, but most are not. Most will have some sort of branding on them. Or for example the engine. They will list it as "BMW S1000RR engine" with number of miles and that's about it. And the lucky (or unlucky) guy who's going to buy it thinking it's a stock engine will be in for a hell of a surprise when he opens up that throttle or takes it to a dyno and realizes it's a 220 hp engine!

More than likely the guys who stole it though are idiots and won't be able to tell what's what. They'll have that Suter swing arm listed as "BMW S1000RR swing arm" and they'll ask like $200-300 for it, and an actual BMW owner will know that's a lot more than an OEM one. And that's when conscience will kick in....because when you see that, do you call the police or the Tyco BMW team and tell them you saw that online somewhere, or do you get the deal of a lifetime and get a custom made Suter swing arm for dirt cheap?

Either way, risky on their part because I'm sure everyone on that team is constantly combing through various sites and forums to look for people posting their parts for sale. Nobody will recognize those parts better than the guys on that team!

They can
A) Put their own fairings on one or 2 of them and go for trackdays and have fun. There are lots of BMWs at the track, noone will ever see. Change the exhaust between the 2 and the chance of being caught is almost 0, remember there are 4 - 5 more months until there is a real bike season over here... Part out the other 2, or use them as donor bikes.

B) Put 2 bikes together of the pieces they want, part out the other 2, keep 2 engines as spares.

C) Part out most of them, throw the unusual parts away.

D) Sell them to someone that just doesnt care, who puts one togehter and then slowly part the rest out.

E) Sink them all in a harbour, get money from another racing team.

All fair points I guess I'm just too much of a pussy... Although if I came across a few of those items they would be hard to turn down.

Coincidentally I was at the Motorcycle Live Show in Birmingham last Sunday, guess I got some of the last pics before the bikes were stolen...

Part of me regrets not trying out a BMW :/....I had the opportunity last summer to ride my friend's '14 S1000RR at Road America and was too much of a chickenshit, because I was afraid I'll crash and wouldn't be able to pay him back. I think what got into my head was that just a few weeks prior to that one of my friends test-rode another friend's RSV4 Factory at our home track and crashed it. Just a simple lowside but ended up paying a pretty good amount to fix it.

Daaaaamn! Hadn't heard about that. That was 2 years ago...wonder if they ever found the bikes or any parts of them, or the bastards who stole them.

I know my bikes aren't anywhere that appealing or valuable, but this is why I have full coverage on my bikes even though they're not street legal...and people look at me like I'm crazy. Worth the relatively small amount IMO.

Last year around this time the WD-40 BSB team got their bikes stolen as well. Not sure what happened with the thieves but I know they got their bikes back a few weeks later.
