Jumping Ship

Thinking about getting rid of the 13 ZX636 and going to the Yamaha R1. Has anyone ridden one of these yet and if so what is your impression.

The R1 is a fun bike to ride. It is fast, handles ok, and has the usual crappy ergonomics that all Yamahahahas have. The ZX10R is a much better machine all the way around; more power, better handling (I swear it handles as good as my 600), and a better electronics package to hold it all together.

The only reason to go R1 over ZX10R is fanboi factor.

And sound! Assuming you're looking at a newer one. The sound of those new R1's with an aftermarket exhaust....LOVE it!

What year R1 are you thinking about buying? What kind of riding are you doing? There is much to assume here......

It honestly depends on how you're using it.. I've ridden an 04, 12 w/ the crossplane and a '15. They really shine on the highway or for longer, steadier commutes. If you can enjoy the fact that you're pretty much laying on the gas tank then it's great in that aspect. I thought that city riding was miserable. Too much power if you're in traffic. Felt very... abrupt in my opinion but hey, it's all personal preference! If you like the raw power aspect, the 04-05 ZX10 is an absolute animal. It's just an angry brute that wants to be ridden like a track bike but wayyyyy easier to control and ride for a long time

The crossplane R1 is pretty jerky compared to the 2013 Zx6r. The R1 feels like a horse that wants only to run, not walk or skip.

One more thing. If you are considering buying a 2009-2014 R1 you will have to put better suspension ( i.e. Racetech, Ohlins etc.) if you want it to handle very good. I have a 2013 R1 and the stock suspension sucks for fast canyon and track riding. I am a bit picky about my suspension but I need it to go fast. The stock 2013 Zx6r big piston forks are far better than stock 2013 R1 forks. The stock shocks are both pretty shitty.

QFT!

I have yet to find a single production motorcycle where I did not have to throw away the OEM shock the moment that I bought the bike. Not one. The new BPF forks (on any brand bike) from Showa are pretty damn amazing. The gap between OEM and quality aftermarket cartridges is definitely a lot smaller than it used to be.

I have raced since 1994 and have had many of race bikes and recently went from a 2009 R1 to a 13 Zx6 and just want to change. Love the ZX and honestly dont know why I want to get rid of it. The new ZX10RR looks interesting as well. Just looking for a new project I guess

Shit, I just saw 58 and Iowa! Didn't recognize you GR otherwise I would've told you to not even think about selling it until we get to race again at MPH next season

Or perhaps you feel like you need more power to keep up now? ....the off-season shit-talking continues!

Some guy on the wera forum was also selling a 2016 zx10 track bike for only 10,500 and I think had under 2000 miles! Not quite as modified as Geoff May's zx10, but had a few typical bolt-ons. Damn good price though. I'm sure it's sold by now.
