Well the CCS weekend did not go as planned. Practice day was a washout. Glad I didn't spend the $150 on that. It was in the high 40s with rain the entire day. Barely anyone rode. There was no sense to it because the forecast was showing dry on Sunday, so there would be nothing to be gained by taking the risk to ride in the terrible conditions in practice. Sunday came a lot and the track was still wet in the morning but the sun was out and slowly drying it. It was still cold, in the low to mid 50s but at least sunny for a while. Had 2 practice sessions in the morning but we were all putting around because the track was still very damp, but not wet enough for rain tires. Not being too familiar with that track, I went out just to get a better feel for it, so I did 1 practice session on the ZX6R and 2 on the R3.
Then I had about a 3 hour break until my races would start. At that point the track was completely dry, but still in the mid 50s or so and cloudy. I signed up for 6 races all in the afternoon, 3 on each bike. First up was the Supersport 500 on the R3. Had a really fun race with my friend that I was pitting with on his ninja 300 and another guy that was on an Aprilia RS250. I didn't have a good start, so I feel about 2 seconds or so behind them from the beginning. I made my way up though and passed them both. Slip-streamed past the 300 on the straight, then passed the RS250 on the brakes in the slowest turn on the track. When I turned around they were still right behind me after a lap. The following lap my friend drafted past me on the straight and the RS250 guy drafted past both of us at the same time.
Now let me back up a bit....just before the race, I told my friend I would either beat him or crash trying! I was determined! lol....now, back to the race. My friend took an odd tight light in T2, a left-hander, and I was able to carry much more corner speed so I thought I'd take him around the outside. Unfortunately he ran wide all the way to the edge of the track right as I was next to him. I had nowhere to go and didn't want to collide with him, so I panicked a bit and grabbed the front brake. That straightened up the bike just enough that I ran off the edge of the track in the wet grass and I tucked the front end instantly. Both bike and myself slide all the way across the track. Thankfully the 2 behind me were quite a ways back and had plenty of time to go around me. I got up ran over to my bike picked up and moved it off the track. Race 1 done for me...as was the other 2 races I planned on doing on the R3. Bike was surprisingly in good shape...if I had a spare shift rod I could've fixed all the damage at the track.
Now I know not to ever get a quality paint job on a race bike lol...it's a freakin crash magnet! lol I was mostly disappointed because I was just starting to get a feel for the bike with the aftermarket suspensions, and I was getting faster and faster with each lap. It was a really fun race, until I hit the ground.
I went on to do the 3 races on the ZX6R but was slow as hell, just like my previous weekend at my home track. All 3 were 2-wave starts and I got lapped by almost all the experts. Those guys are unreal in how fast they are. I know I was having a bad day and I should've been a few seconds faster for sure, but those guys are in a whole different world. Needless to say, I ran slower than I did 2 years ago, which was my first and only time at that track, and it was my first time racing too. So I was pretty disappointed to be so off-pace. Maybe the crash messed me up a bit too, but I don't think that was really it. So my results were nothing to brag about. I think I ended up with 12/16, 10/14, and 8/9 in those races. Haven't even looked at the GoPro videos yet but I can't imagine there's anything cool to see aside from me freaking out about not being ran over by the freight train (aka...the group of experts that lapped me).
