SM vs LG Track Gearing 2011 zx6r

What do you guys usually run for gearing for a smaller technical track versus a Larger track like lets say Road America where the speeds are higher. I used to have a 1000cc pulling me around so it really didn't matter. Haha..

No one has any good suggestions as for a good starting point?

I didn't want to mess with changing sprockets out for the different tracks here in the NW so I went with -1 in the front as a happy medium. It seems like a lot of riders prefer a -1/+2 setup, but I never tried that setup since Portland International is my home track and has it has a super long front straight and I thought that I would be topped out half through it. It is .9 miles long to be exact without the chicane! As a matter of fact, I am thinking of going back to stock since I am now racing at PIR and could use all the top end that I can get there. I figure I can just alter my gear selection from what I am used to coming out of a couple select turns to get some good drive.
If I was going to change gearing for different tracks I would definitely try the -1/+2 rear setup for Oregon Raceway Park in eastern Oregon. It is a super tight and technical track with short straights. Then I would try that setup at The Ridge Motorsports Park as well which also has a lot of turns and elevation changes. -1 has worked well for me at the Ridge though so I haven't had the urge to make changes. I would also like to hear others opinions on gearing for fast tracks like PIR. Does anyone run stock anymore? Haha

By the way, did you just pick that 2011 up here in the NW? Looks exactly like a WMRRA novice's bike that I saw for sale a couple of months ago. Right down to his race number lol. That bike has some goodies on it!

Stock gearing is a good starting point. A lot of people on this forum run -1+2 (it's what I run) the tracks I go to are Thunderhill East & West, Buttonw Willow raceway, and Laguna Seca all between 2-3.2 miles with fairly decently front/back straight. THe gearing I have works really well for me at all these tracks. But id say start of with stock and see from there

Didn't see this until now. I ran -1/0 on the zx6r at Road America last year and it wasn't quite enough. I topped out just a bit before the end of the front straight.

I think this year i'll go with -1/-1 most likely, or 0/+2. I tend to get a bit lazy with sprockets though. I don't change them nearly as much as others and I just gear my bike for long tracks such as RA. Anything else it just means I won't get into 6th gear which is fine. The -1/0 setup seems to work just fine at the other 4 tracks I went to this year, 2 of which are twisty with short straights, then other 2 had a semi-long straight (5th gear) but the rest pretty twisty.

You can never get it perfect on any track, just need to adjust shifting points more. For example going from -1/+2 to -1/0 at my home track meant that I didn't have to shift into 5th gear at the end of our straight, and then only shift once from 4th to 3rd going into the turn after the straight. So I saved myself an upshift and a downshift in the space of like 1 second.

I run -1/+2 and like Felix I'm running the same tracks usually. I've never changed it in 6 years. The only track I don't run because of my gearing is Willow Springs (the big track) due to the famous turn 8 which you can see upwards of 150mph. I will see about 135 at Buttonwillow and never hit 6th gear. Laguna Seca I'm shifting into 6th at the start/finish line and I'm not hitting the rev limiter over the hill. At -1/+2 the bike will hit 150mph pretty much on the button if you're on a 2009-2012 zx6r.

Thanks for the info. My two local tracks are Black Hawk Farms which is a shorter straight and smaller and Road America which is a huge track with a long straight. I guess I will just order a few different options and mess around with it.
I haven't ever really messed with gear with a 600 on the track.

Yea I got it from Washington from KFG Motorsports. It was a very good deal so I jumped on it and shipped it out to me. It does have a lot of goodies and most of the parts are only a year or less old. It will be fun to try out.

I think that's slightly optimistic. Mine topped out at 154 with -1/0 gearing. I would think the 2 teeth on the rear would make more than 4 mph difference. But maybe not??

Oh and I'm talking GPS speed not what the speedo says.

Sweet! I wanted to scoop it up when the owner had it for sale. Haha. We had pitted next to each other during a race weekend, definitely a well maintained bike! KFG is top notch too, Barry the former owner of GP suspension is the owner. They serviced the suspension on it as well so you are set!

I calibrated my speedo healer using a gps. That sucker is dead on to 100..

I can confirm the 150 top speed with -1/+2 (SpeedoHealer calibrated).

Finally did my first track day at Black Hawk Farms with the bike and decided to just run -1/+1 and was happy with the result. The bike felt great even though I need to get suspension setup! We will see July 10th When I get to Road America. Unfortunately due to work for not understanding why I need days off to ride on the track and denying my PTO request I can't go there this up coming week with STT after Motoamerica!

What did you think of Blackhawk? I was just there for my 2nd time 2 weeks ago. We had some top-notch shitty weather that's for sure lol I really don't care much for that track, but it's mainly because I really suck there lol

Yea Blackhawk is all I have ran so it's all I know at the moment. It was 74 and sunny Wednesday so it was a really nice day. I got lots of laps in to figure the new bike out which is nice. The month of June I am so booked for work that I can't take any additional days off then the 21st which I had off already I put in months ago to do another day at Blackhawk. July Road America and Putnam and maybe some others coming up so we will see if I can drag some of my friends along to help keep cost down.
