Long distance!

Between medical school and medical school (yes, it's that crazy), I don't really post much, but I figured I'd post some feedback of my long journey from Phoenix to Orange County, to the Bay Area.

For those who are interested in doing such a thing (long distance) on our bikes, I have gathered some first hand, empirical evidence for you all. There was a thread a while back about some dude wanting to buy this bike and using it for long distance, to which many of us (including myself) objected. I then took my suggestion, threw it out the window and did ~800 miles or so in two days.

As far as comfort mods go, I have a very ghetto, torn up Saddleman (comfort?) seat, the one with the 4 bumps on it. It probably helped in keeping me from becoming sterile. If any of you guys want to do a trip like this...I recommend rethinking it. I did it because I had to/wanted the experience/didn't want to spend money to ship the bike.

400-450 miles in a stretch (with stops) is incredibly painful and boring. You think an hour or two on a highway is boring? Try five. It is more boring and painful than I imagined, and I have done 300 miles before. Somehow that last tank of miles just takes it out of you. Our bikes end up focusing the pressure on a very specific spot (ischial tuberosities if any of you guys have taken gross anat) and it just crushes it for hours. I got to my friend's place in OC and thought I was going to be walking funny for the rest of my life. A cushy sofa had never felt so good.

It was a good experience, but it has solidified the idea in my mind that our bikes are simply not meant for this kind of work. You can push them into this service, but they will bite you in the a$$ (quite literally). Hope that gives some people insight on whether or not they want to embark on such a journey on a ZX. FYI, I have an 09 ZX6r with no relevant mods other than the seat. No cushy grips, no hand warmers, no alternate pegs, no bars. If you're going to do something like this, make sure to take plenty of stops, drink water, and check the weather (ESPECIALLY THE TEMPS!!).

Ride safely!

I've ridden all day, but in a more active way. I can see how highway miles would be a lot different.

Someday, I'll own that FJR for such events.... someday..

Oh and for myself and the rest of the plebes out there:

Whenever I see skeleton pictures like that I have flashbacks to anatomy and worry that I need to study more.

That's a long and boring drive let alone ride. I have made it Many times. I went to the University of Arizona. Lots of long ad straight road.

Are you from the Bay originally??
