Down I go

Was out riding with a buddy who's a new rider, and I was in the lead. It was by his request, since he led the day before and wanted someone in front to give him some visual cues to follow. We're taking it pretty easy, right about the speed limit, really casual on the turns.

Well, we come up to a 90 right at an intersection, and, like usual, I do a later tip-in and then execute the turn quickly (more lean, shorter overall turn than a big arc around the corner). Well, sure enough, there's a decent little slew of gravel right there.

From what I can recall, the front end just tucked down and the bike laid right down. I jumped up and ran over, righted it, and checked the engine cover. Just like the MotoGP guys do, except take one 0 off their speed. I did NOT want it to be cracked. Fortunately, just some scratches on the plastic, and a broken rear brake footpeg. I rode it home.

I was wearing leathers, and it would have been a nice little scrape without protective pants. As it was, my buddy says "I think I'll shop for some pants today"

Yeah, I'll probably sand and rattlecan, but it has to wait until it rains. I'm glad I didn't busy anything serious, though if you know of a brake lever....

Glad you are okay Commiehunter! Sorry about the damage.

That front end goes away bloody fast. I had that same thing happen a few years ago but I hit mud on my FZ6R.

As an 06 owner, I plan on not riding this year and buying a pair of pants and boots before I do...

Dude.....you're about to get roasted. You pour soul

Glad you are ok!

As you expressed, track turning habits are probably not the best choice for street riding. What we would call a "lazy" turn on the track is the right choice when you cannot guarantee the riding surface.

Heal up quickly and get back on that horse!

I like the improved visibility I get through the turn with the later entry, but, as you noted, the bike might not have gone down if it was a wider arc with less lean.

I actually rode in to work today again. The right gear makes all the difference.

Thanks to all, and ride safe. (Especially if you're on an 05/06)

I've never ridden on a track, and really have no intentions of doing so. Though given the opportunity I would hop on it. With that being said, what sort of gear do you guys use and what's the overall cost? A few years ago I was young and dumb and would always be out in a tank top and basketball shorts. Now I always ride with a padded jacket and denim jeans. I've never downed my bike after owning it for over 5 years but it's never if, but when....

After racing, I only wear full gear. I can't even get on a street bike for a cruise without a back protector or I feel naked. This is why a lot of racers log a lot less miles on the street than they used to, or stop riding outside of the track completely.
