How my Vacation in Italy Went DOWN!

Must say up front I'm over 60 and have a ZX6R 636 ABS, CBR600RR, Honda Metropolitan and Honda Elite 110. Sorry this may be a long story but a lot to tell.

On the 29th drove over to Atlanta to board a flight to Rome, flew to 3 hours then turned back because of a malfunctioning smoke detection computer. So after 6 hours of flying I was in Detroit, hum doesn't look like Rome... So next afternoon left Detroit for Rome. Arrived met my wife at the hotel, picked up a rental car and drove to Sorrento. !st day in Sorrento we drove the Amalfi coast with her parents very nice but overcast with some rain. Next day was pretty so caught the boat to Capri. Rented a scooter (it was a real POS) and rode up to the town then set out for Annacapri. Lot of traffic and wound up behind a tiny three wheeled truck which I passed going around a switchback after very carefully checking the big mirror. No problem but on the exit of the switchback there was a bus in the middle of the road so dodged him to the right and then back to the left. At this point I ran out of road and scraped the rock wall on my right. I needed maybe 6" more or a little more power and stability. So at about 9MPH I crashed into the wall which was jagged rocks not the smooth rock walls there are in other places. Once the right bar made contact it was over. Wound up on the pavement with my wife beside me. Know all of you folks who have gone down at well over 100 are laughing now! :-) My wife was not injured just a couple of bruises. I had a knot on the forehead cuts on my face, right shoulder, broken patella (kneecap) and a badly sprained big toe. After a few minutes the ambulance showed up and hauled me to the local ER. First responders were great did all the right stuff like don't take off the helmet, stay down, neck brace, backboard, etc. In the ambulance they put an IV in while driving down the twisty narrow roads! Got me to the ER and cleaned up the cuts and put a stitch near my right eye and 4 in my knee. Immmmm, only problem I had was they didn't deaden anything first. Next it was off to X-ray while my wife talked to the police. Don't know what she said but they had a form they were filling out and then they tore it up. Nasty lump on my forehead - ad on a scooter helmet with my trusty Michelin Motorcycle Racing ball cap under it - makes a good sun visor and protects my head from the people who wore it before. The cloth cover of the bill is torn and the plastic part bill for is scraped but obviously it protected my from direct contact with a rock!!!! Stitch on my face was very close the my eye.

Sorry to say but had to cut the trip short and come back to the US for knee surgery. Trip was supposed to conclude with going to the Historic Races at Monaco! totally bummed out about that.

Have to give a big shout out to Delta, pilot made correct decision to turn back. They put us up in a hotel and got us in early the next day and compensated us for the delay. After the accident they changed my reservation and put us in three seats with an empty seat between us and provided wheelchair service from drop-off at the airport to pickup in Atlanta. Perfect service!
