My last ride... So far

I live in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S., we - the whole West Coast has experienced an abysmal wet/cold/snowy winter. It's March and we've amassed our average annual rain fall... for the year.

I was looking at some photos and came upon these. They were of the last time I had the 636 out on the road. I went east of Salem out Hwy 22 and jumped off@ Stayton, OR. I segued out Kingston/Lyons Rd. This goes out on some bluff lands that look down on the Santiam River. The pix were taken 12 Feb '17.

These first set were taken on a happy goat trail of a road called, fittingly Pleasant Valley.

The next pix are of my newly re-designed saddle, there is a bicycle gel seat 'French' into the foam - one can vaguely see the slight bump from the gel portion. I came up with the contrasting colour and subtle reverse stitching pattern for the saddle/pillion.

I took this ride to specifically test the results. I can honestly report back: 2-thumbs up.

One can see without intimately knowing the location, that the North Fork of the Santiam River is rather swollen. It's only more so with a solid month of daily rainfall.

The road surfaces were generally pretty good, grip was good - not great because it was in the 37° F to about 44°. Fortunately I had my First Gear electric jacket & gloves cranked up to 'toasty.

These last few pix really have little to do with this ride, but I was rummaging through some boxes of Moto gear I had stashed in the closet in my home office/guitar room.

At any rate I came across an old-ish Hyperpro steering damper I once had on a 2000 R1 and again on a '02 R1. The Yamaha mount was incompatible with the Kawasaki steering stem set up. So, I cruised thru eBay and found a tooled billet Al mount with hardware, including new steering stem nut - to my door for $35.00 - deal!

Thanks for the little slice of home.... I recall going swimming with cousins on the North Fork of the Santiam, way back in the '70's. That was some seriously cold glacier fed water....

"Basic stuff fellas. Use your head for something other than to break your next fall."

"There's this adage that we have 2 ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Unfortunately with the Internet people have taken this old adage and turned it around. They have two eyes and 10 fingers so they think they need to post 5 times as much as they read. And since they have 10 fingers and one brain, they only have to think 10% of the time! "

I'm one of.those intrepid sport bike riders that can & does ride throughout winter... It is part of the appeal of living in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, we normally get weeks of cool, but dry weather. Just not this winter.

I have great H²O proof M/C rain gear: boots, pants, jacket & gloves, plus heated gear. Which is the key component of winter riding north of the Sunbelt States. I am merely suffering from withdrawal from riding. It's what really keeps me human, and not some sort of 'dick head.' Riding keeps me sane. I'm just whining

These pix were taken in January, the former three pix are of OR's Blogett-Eddieville Rd in the Coast Range. The latter two were up N in WA's Pueget Sound area. The bridge is Hood Canal Bridge; the last is of Pueget Sound looking W to the Olympic Mountains.

Brother, I almost always have an awesome time when I am on the Zed Ex-Six Are. Riding makes a better human being, and I seriously mean the last phase.

Pix of better days: These pix were taken Autumn of '16. The first two of taken on the upper Clackamas River/upper Brieghtenbush River divide; the background is of Columnar Bisalt which is super ancient - this is where the stones used in landscape fountains, usually it's drilled for water to come out of the top.

The 3rd is a wine vineyard in Yamhill County.

Then 4th is of the lower Brieghtenbush River.

The last is River Road (Willamette River) in Marion County. There are two such low R/R bridges on this road. Unfortunately, the cement anchors have taken their share of lives. The entrance/exit sight lines are much more blind than the photo suggest. I take them in 1st, and enter the curves with my 'butt cheek hanging off the opposite side', for a quicker flick back to the right side as I exit the esses.

You are correct that the winter has been an especially cold and wet one here on the West Coast. Down here in Sunny Southern California, we have had far too much rain. Well I guess we needed it to cure our drought condition. I put the bike away in the middle of December and didn't really ride until last weekend. Normally the winter months are the best for Southern California. Now I know how the rest of the country feels about the wet and the bad roads. Nice pictures. Glad to see someone got out to ride a bit.

I spent my youth living W of Calgary. That's one of many great joys of my life. The weather is why I'd never again live N of the Columbia River. Too F-ing cold/rainy/snowy - too brief of a riding season (most years). But I love to ride N of the 49th during the summer (when I get the opportunity.)

Cheers
