Are you using your left passenger footpeg? That helps and you can almost start seated. I am still working on this, but that is what I found helps to keep my balance point.

^+1 on staggereds... just keep your knees bent and break covered BP feels different standing up just like anything it takes practice find a empty lot or a stretch of empty rd to practice on

ive got 1st 2nd and 3rd down pretty good standing and now i hate sitting down. its all about covering the rear brake and getting to balance point as quick (but steadily) as possible. throttle control is key too... you cant be on off on off.. small adjustments. and if you feel like you have to "save" it, just let it down... not worth running off the road or flying off the back.

and some people prefer to hold the back brake a tad and power through with the gas to balance... but on the other hand some people like to hold steady on the gas and tap the brake.. either way you choose.. take it slow and dont feel rushed or pressured. hope this helps

yup, staggered is where its at. And cover that brake!!!! i looped last may, got comfortable and stopped covering it. BIG ASS MISSTAKE. and take your time with em. its all about being comfortable. Put 70% of your weight on that passenger peg and let it come up to you. you shouldnt even have to clutch it in 2nd if your wieght is correct.
and be prepared to fuck up your driving record |

And I seriously doubt he's going to bring that bike up in second at a controllable speed without the clutch.. even if he is on the pillion pegs. RPM's gotta be up there for power wheelies and by then, you're flyin'..

without gearing you will not get the front up in second with out the clutch, not enough mid range. edit he has a 636, owned. itll come up easy with bouncing\no clutch somewhere around 70 or so.
stand ups are much more controllable once you get confortable on the rear peg or on the front pegs and standing. knees slightly bent, helmet pointed straight ahead and weight centered. nothing worse than putting too much weight on one side of the bike...

Clutch or throttle are both safe ways. Whichever one doesnt need you to bounce is what ya want to do. Bouncing can potentially put your weight out of position if your just learning.
Oh and another thing that made it way easier to learn. if you happen to have any nice long somewhat steep hills around ya they make for great practice. It brings the balance point to you much sooner without that "oh shit im going over backwards" feeling. This allowed me to get used to my throttle control and staying at a consistant speed.
*** and make sure you go up it, not down. Also no smart to crest the hill with the front in the air either, ya just dont know whats going to be in your way.
