Its beautiful down here in Florida today, close to 80 with a breeze... obviously I had to go ride. I geared up and went down a new road along the water to find some good turns but more importantly a long straight away with a big shoulder and no traffic. (Thank you google earth)
I decided it was time to try the first clutch up wheelie... Went to the end of the straight to look for shit in the road and turned around when it was all clear. Kicked off the from the shoulder and got it up to about 20 in second (I thought I would start in second gear just in case I got a little more kick than I planned for). Got my body positioned, clutched in, loaded it up to around 7K, and dropped it like my hand was on fire. I was blessed with a roar and a neck snapping take off from the 636, but alas! no lift off... I gave this two more tries at about 7 again and then 8 but just wasn't getting the timing right and had come to the end of the road. Spun it around and decided that it was time to grow a pair and bring that front end up to look at the sun. Got into second, hit 20 and loaded it up to 8 again. Dropped it right at the peak of my throttle and up she went! Now in the next 1.5 seconds (could of sworn it was 10 at the time) my eyes grew twice their size and I tasted the adrenaline as the nose came up and started blocking out the road ahead. It felt awesome and way smoother than I expected, unfortunately I didn't hold on the throttle and put it back down from about a foot... I chased a few more at about 2 feet but that was enough for one day (+ its 80 and sunny in full gear, I was sweating my ass off!). I have seen the light and caught the bug, looks like I've got something to practice!

guys whatever you do, just take your time and learn your limitations.. yes wheelies can be fun, but in the blink of an eye they can go horridly wrong.
but i will add this lil video i took when i was testing my ghetto helmet cam... |

I need to get practicing again. I remember when I did my first clutch-up. I also remember my best clutch-up less than a block away from my house. I carried that one for a good half a block. I was giggling like a school girl!

Nice one Killz
For the new riders (me included) , it was common at first to NOT be rolling fast enough. This can cause the front to come up too fast and vilantly. When you find that correct speed, the front will come up nice and smooth and just ride it out.

I should make a GoPro of some distance wheelies, or maybe a how-to like some of these others.

I've been starting to mess around again. I've always been able to pop it but not hold them. I got really close to holding one today. Once it warms up some more and I get a new rear tire on I'll be practicing some more

My thing when I try is that Im afraid that when I dump the clutch its going to just loop on me. On a 636 is that something I dont really have to worry about? Also are you pulling up or letting the bike do all the work?

Any bike (well.....just about any bike) can "loop" you over if done incorrectly. But as stated, if you have decent forward momentum, when the front comes up, part of that will continue to propel the bike forward and upward. If you're going too slow, then most of the power will want to loop it. A 636 is plenty to bring the front up without having to pull on the bars.
just don't do one of these..... no matter how many times I watch it, I still can't stop laughing. |
