I use a product called "Moto Wash" for the deep cleaning. It's one of the best products I've used. I got it mainly for the dirt bike. You spray it on, let it sit for a minute, then spray it off. I use a brush though and it works even better. It gets grease and oils off of the engine with EASE. Kerosine for the chain and any chain lube will do. I've been using the DuPont chain lube from Wal-Mart now for a while with no issues. Works great, readily available and cheap.
Edit: I don't have to use the Moro wash that often on the street bike. I usually only wash it when I'm caught in the rain but regular soap does the trick. I wash all the plastics first, then switch mitts and do everything else (wheels, frame, swingarm, engine covers, shock, forks etc...).
