NYC not freindly at all.....

NEW YORK — On the Brooklyn waterfront, with the Lower Manhattan skyline visible in the background Tuesday afternoon, two bulldozers rumbled into place on either end of a line of about 70 motorcycles leaning on their sides like a shelf full of half-fallen books.

New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton walked down the line, briefly surveying the bikes, before stepping onto a small riser to launch the destruction with a wave of a checkered flag. Then the bulldozers lifted their scoops and crawled back and forth over the bikes, flattening them with a thrum of metallic clatters and creaks.

"We want to send out a very strong message to the nitwits and knuckleheads who insist on operating these vehicles on the streets (and elsewhere)," Bratton said. They are "creating extraordinary dangers for not only themselves, but for the public."

The department has been cracking down on unlicensed drivers who operate ATVs, mini-bikes and motorcycles without helmets. So far this year, more than 679 bikes have been confiscated and dozens of drivers arrested on such charges as reckless endangerment.

Chief of Patrol Carlos Gomez said nearly 80 percent of the confiscated vehicles remain unclaimed — some are pricey, others are homemade. "And this is their ultimate fate," he said.

Apparently a number of them were one-offs, custom, junkers, etc., so there was minimal value in them. At least, that's the excuse...

Not from what I have heard. I'm sure there were some beaters... but most were simply off road bikes that were confiscated for riding on the street. Good running condition.

Regardless of monetary value... there's other value. Technical schools could have used them to teach people how to tear down engines, work with tools, etc. Could have gotten a few to donate to MSF programs... many options...

This was my comment to the city of new york on that post... They were trying to justify themselves in the comments of the video multiple times. Such a bad PR move by NYC and the NYPD. Backfired in a BIG way. The comments on FB are pretty much all on the side of "WTF are you thinking?!?!"

"City of New York Government Those vehicles are NOT illegal in the city of New York. They're illegal to RIDE on the STREETS of the city of New York. To your second point: The streets new NY will NEVER be "Completely safe" and taking these vehicles and running them over with a bulldozer does NOTHING to make the city safer.

The metal from those vehicles isn't worth 20% of the actual vehicle itself in running condition. Plus... you can't just throw them in a recycling bin. They have to be cleaned of all plastics and rubber and have no oil residue or they're deemed "dirty metal" and not worth as much as "Clean metal". So you're going to be paying people to tear them apart and clean them for recycling. Then there are the fees that people will pay after the fact (if they stay in the state of NY) for registration fees, insurance, etc. Goldmine opportunity that you simply pissed away.

I could go on...."

Massive fail on part of both the (irresponsible) owners and the silly, heavy-handed government that was more intent on delivering a 'message' rather than a commonsense solution.

You do what you can for as long as you can, and when you finally can't, you do the next best thing. You back up but you don't give up.- Chuck Yeager

"The department has been cracking down on unlicensed drivers who operate ATVs, mini-bikes and motorcycles without helmets. "

So, they don't bother people who operate these things WITH helmets? Or possibly helmets, but no license? What a complete collection of mixed messages..... who is the PR department trying to address?

I get it, you don't want them ripping up the streets...we've all seen the vids on YouTube of them doing it. I see zero point in crushing them though. I also get it if you auction them off they'll probably just end up on the streets again. Instead why not donate them to vocational schools? I'm sure they would of helped a lot of schools and people that way. Instead let's be tough guys and run them over with a fucking bulldozer....fucking brilliant.

also they listed a reason as "thought to be stolen"

wow really. we could not try to find the owners?

this is what happens when we let dumb people be in charge of other dumber people (government)

I bet the board meeting for this is way better then anyone could think of.
