Hey guys, my 2003 636 rear shock has seen better days. The bike has only done 11,000 miles but has been left to battle the elements before i got it. The spring is rusty and looks tired. As i cant quite afford a top class after market job, would it be ok to get a new spring and re-gas the unit, rather than replacing it with a cheaper after market one??
Any help on this would be great !!!!!

It`s about £100 to rebuild a shock, that includes new seals, check over, oil and a re-gas.The springs rarely need replacing but if you want to replace the spring because it looks bad, that will be around another £80-£100.
Nitron and hagon both do new aftermarket shocks for under £300.The Nitron shock has good reviews, is length adjustable and seems simple to set up with rebound and compression combined!!!

I have to agree with both of you....... depending on budget.
Used, but newer shock for under $150= win!
Rebuild and re spring your existing unit= Win Win!
If you have the cash, rebuilding yours to your weight and riding style would produce the most benefit. If you don't, a low mileage newer one is a good bet too.

I had the same problem. A bushing got all bound up inside and turned stiff as a rock. I bought a used shock on eBay for $28 and just tossed in a new spring. Guy told me a rebuild was about $200-$250. So I spent less than $140 for the shock, spring and setup (Had a local shop set the bike for my weight). Suspension is THEEE best upgrade I think I've ever done. She sits so smoothly in corners now.

if its just down to looks then take spring off and powder coat it or spray it (clean it up well first)
also tidy up the shock unit while its in bits

eBay. Iv got three low mileage ones in the last 4 years, An 07, 08 & now an 09.
All from ZX6Rs, there much better than the stock unit on your bike.
Even when it was new.

I grabbed an 09 ZX6R shock off of ebay for $54 shipped at the end of last year. I could NOT pass up that deal, and I'm glad I didn't. It is a lot better than the 06 unit I was running before, though I don't know how many miles were on that shock before I got it. Anyways 07 and newer ZX6R shocks are better than the 05/06, unless you get the 05/06 ZX6RR shock, which is supposedly the same performance as the 07/08.

I had my J1 done by K-Teck. Cost all in around £120. Had it done at 8000 miles as it felt sloppy. Has made the bike turn quicker but you lose comfort.
Now done about 24k and suspension still feels taut. Changed the fork oil for a higher grade too
